setting jakes n14 celect plus

    Hello. The n14 celect plus requires the cummins 3375006 dial gauge to set the jake brakes. Can I use a regular no name brand magnetic base dial gauge I bought from google shopping a few months back to set the adjustment? It's never been used and I'm sure it's not out of calibration. Thank you

    If you believe it to be fairly accurate the answer is yes. Not many mechanics use Cummins tools, they cost too much and must be special ordered most of the times.

    Thanks. Besides snap-on what would be a good dial indicator to buy for future reference?

    Central makes pretty decent micrometers and dial indicators. Its vibration and rapid changing temps that get to tools such as that.

    So It would be a good practice to purchase or have an expert re-calibrate the dial indicator gauges at least once a year or so?

    I have a small magnetic base that I cut the shafts, and use the dial indicator. To test a dial indicator all you have to do is set one, on somthing that bottoms out to say .020 then replace the dial and set to .000 if after adjusting the bolt down till it stops it is at -.020 it is good. I have used the same dial for 40 years never had a problem with it. I buy very good measurement tools. Starrett and Mitutoyo.
    Doing the set evenly, valves, injectors and the Jake's makes the engine run, smooth and the customer remembers that.
    I remove every adjusted and with a shop towel tap it flat on the paper to bleed out the oil and look for a crack, many of them are cracked. I also change every innerspring on every valve set.
