Well it's now down to what motor to use. The motor will be a pre emissions engine. Will it be a Cat, N14, or 60 Series Detroit is the question. Any advice has to what years to use and what kind. Thanks guys. Another thing will be running the southern lanes with van and reefer.

I would do Detroit. Cheaper at purchase, cheaper more available service and parts. Good fuel economy. Next choice for me is Cat, but Cat truck engines have been gone since 2010 so expect to see some drop off in dealership parts and support for them. My $.02

Dealership support for CAT's ain't gonna disappear they still put the same motors in bulldozers. My vote would be 6NZ C15.
TwinStickPeterbilt and Licensed to kill Thank this. -
Well the 12.7L S60 production was discontinued in 2007 and stopped being available in a truck in like 2004 so if your worried about Cat parts being available....... The major hurdle your going to have using an older engine is they don't have j1939 datalink and won't communicate with the newer dashes. Older S60 unless you use a newer DDEC IV ecm will be j1708 and all of the N14's are j1708. The 40pin Cats are the same way. I've heard Mawk makes a module to convert them but I've never seen it.Crystalbeach and DL550CAT Thank this.

The 12.7l s60 had max 445 hp that were 04-07 year. The pre-04 12.7s had max 500 hp. My most first choice is 6nz c-15 and second is Detroit 12.7.

don't forget the 12.7 rebel version.

I have a lot of friends telling me to go with a cat. Question which is better 2ws, 6nz or 5ek. I understand parts are high but the shop I know does good work on cats and will receive a small discount on there work. Also thinking about doing Microblue treatment through out.

5EK is a 40 pin so your going to have to buy a new ECM and wiring harness to make it work in a glider. Other than maybe a few less oil leaks with the C15 block vs 3406E there isn't going to be $0.02 difference between them. It's more of what you can find for a good price.
-
2ws is a smaller cat only 475 horse and 1850 torque, but it is fast and powerful. Or you can take a 6nz. They are also reliable and rock solid.

Cat truck engine dealers are different than cat equipment dealers, you can get truck engine parts at an equipment dealer, but truck engine dealers like at truck dealerships may fade away somewhat. Notice that many Paccar dealers are dropping their affiliation with Detroit since Paccar quit equipping trucks with DD power after 2003. Not a deal killer but, a consideration.
