Can any one give me an idea of what it will cost to have finals replaced in a Galaxy 33? Its an older model... (maybe 2000) year model.

Yeah I know I could call or stop by a CB shop & get an actual quote but I figure I'm gonna get a good broad range of prices in here, so at least I'll have an idea.
Also, I keep seeing Mosfet or Mofset(?) brand finals..?? Any low tech general info on the differences &/or why one is better than the other is also appreciated.

I also know this might be a silly question but will finals have any effect on how well the radio receives signals? I am assuming the finals only effect the transmit/output side. This radio just doesn't seem to work well more than about a mile at most... at very most. I am pretty sure the transmit is bad because of the finals. Last time I had it in the shop about 18 months ago, they said the finals were getting pretty bad/weak.

Thanks for any serious, relative answers :)

Finals will affect output not incoming and mosfets are the new environment friendly finals.

OK Is your radio not working at all?

I would start with the antenna and coax before thinking about the finals. If you are getting out only to a mile, that is relative to where you are at and how much static is on the channel.

Also Mosfet is a type of semiconductor, not a brand. If your radio has it as an original, then you can replace it but if it has a transistor, replacing it properly with a mosfet would be difficult.

As for cost, I have no clue.

It does work. The reason I "thought" it needed a final was because, the last time I had the radio serviced, the guy said the finals were getting weak & not doing so well. That was maybe 2 or 3 years ago. So, I just thought it was getting weak. Now, I said "thought" because I did take it to the CB shop today & no, it doesn't need a final. By the way, it "supposedly" only has one final, not dual finals. They said it was pushing 5 watts at a dead key & about 25 watts during modulation. So, its fine.

Correct. It was a couple of things. The SWRs were high at about 4. They changed out a 6' coax to a 21' coax ($27). They tried an 11' & it raised the SWRs. They also slanted or pointed the antenna forward quite a bit, apparently cause it was getting feed back or interference from the cab somewhere. Now the SWRs are around 1.4, so we are good now. I also had them change the mic cord while I was there cause the big cord on the RK 56 was old, brittle & breaking apart exposing the wires ($30). I also had a couple of knobs cleaned ($10) cause they were "scaratching" when I turned them (I have a talkback in this radio).

Thanks for that info. He said if I had needed to replace the final, it would have been about $80. They do not actually make the same factory final for this Galaxy 33 anymore so all you can get now is the Mosfet.

Thanks... Again, as stated above, it would have been about $80 :)

Some of the older shops still have the old finals and drivers available. They aren't as cheap as they used to be though.

Well I love the finals are weak crap, sorry but they either work or don't. It isn't a tube where there is a problem with gas or grid shorting out.

The 5 to 25 watts are not the finals but the way the final is modulated. I was there when the dial-a-watt and other "enhancements" were hitting the market, won't get into that but I know what it is all about.

    Yep coax helps.

    $10 to clean a pot?

    I'm in the wrong business.

$10 can get you a couple cans of Deoxit and that does pretty good.

I thought it had a 2sc1969 final, which they still make. It is something like $8 ir $10 where I get my parts or was the last time I looked. I have a box of them somewhere from the old old days of bartering. It is really simple to change by the way, 10 minutes worth the work.

    No problem.
