Happened to me today! Scheduled to pick up a preloaded trailer tomorrow, plenty of time for delivery (1200 miles, 2.5 days). So, no problem, I still have today to diddle around and have fun, right?

Got a message on my phone that load had to be picked up today (A-B in Houston). Freak!!

BUT, I called my DM (in former years, the title would have been "dispatcher"), and he took me off that load and put me on another that doesn't pick up until tomorrow at 1400, same shipper. Very little drama, problem solved.

Point I am trying to make, I suppose, is that in former years I probably would have called DM and started cussing him out and threatening to quit, and just making a compete ### of myself. Now that I am older and more experienced, it was much more of a "we have a problem here, let's work together to solve it." Works a lot better.

I do have a good DM (dispatcher), though.

Dispatchers job is to assign loads to drivers. If something changes its not the dispatchers fault. But a lot of drivers do take it out on them.If you still had to pick up that load today would you still be as calm as you was in your post? But I agree, try and work things out before throwing a fit, that gets you no where.

Well, bottom line is that I WAS NOT GOING TO PICK UP LOAD TODAY, but no need to get in a fight with DM. I do understand that they have have their job to do, and are not always in control.

But, yes, treating DM's like human beings usually leads to them treating me like a human being.

But won't that set a dangerous precedent? I mean, do it often enough, and you may have them actually believing they are human! Seems that could be a dangerous thing. . .:biggrin_2559:

In my company every DM needs to do a few trips in a truck and all drivers need to do a few days as a DM , big change in attitudes usually follows :)

Beware security at A-B Houston - especially the supervisor that is there on weekends - she's a first-rate jerk!
