Which of these would be a better buy???
1) International prostar. 10 speed manuel, 435 cumiins, 3:58 rears--- x Crete fleet truck.
2) Mack, 10 speed auto shift, 455 mack eng, 3:55 rears--- x Tyson fleet truck.
Both between 4 to 500,000 miles/70 inche sleepers/price same or very close.
I am on the fence between these 2 trucks. looking at a purchase from Loan Mountain Leasing in Iowa.
I have never drove Mack, but heard it was good vehicle.
Any advice/comments could help, Thanks...

I went to LMT and looked at what you want......I like the Mack but in the 300's. Those 200k saved will put a pretty penny in your pocket and you still have time to save the package ( at 300k ) and make it your own. ( from fleet maint. schedules ) I don't like the fuel cap though, too small. You need to fuel everyday but it is what it is. Chicken man was interested in weight not driver convenience.
Weigh the price diff between the 300's and the 400's...I mean 399 is the same as 415 to me but 306 is way different than 485 IMO.
Mack was rated at the back wheels too, not the flywheel and they hold their value. Downside is many things on the truck are proprietary and have to come from the dealer. Not many parts houses sell Mack parts. Get a warranty if you can afford it.
I vote Mack....good luck. -
Thanks for the come back. I am leaning toward the Mack. Have read and heard more complaints about new cummins engine. I owned a couple pre egr ones before, they were very dependable. I am not to Keen on auto trans having little experience with them in Trucks, that disturbs me alittle about the Mack.

is the cummins a 14l engine? the mack is a smaller block most likely.smaller blocked engines will not pull as well overall.when an auto tranny goes out,it will be expensive i am thinking.plenty of used 10 speed manuals out there if you had to penny pinch in a bind.
i have a friend that is eliminating the macks(2006,2008,2010,2013 all daycabs/spec'd for heavy duty use ) in his timber business as they are weak, costly when they go down, and are not anything like the old macks in his opinion.his are used to pull puplwood/logs out of the woods daily so he would know.NO they are not cut back/castrated so they should do a much better job than what they actually do.he does not run any automatics. -
as someone who drives a Mack, what year and motor MP7or MP8? DPF only or DPF/DEF emissions?

Right offhand I would lean toward the truck that came from the smaller fleet. I go lots of the same places as the Tyson trucks and honestly haven't seen a beat up one yet. Also, it seems as if small dedicated fleets are better on maintenance, and attract better drivers, as opposed to the megas.
Macks are big in the Northeast, so I'd personally go toward the Mack myself.
