Coming up the 14 mile 5 to 6 percent grade on I-17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff yesterday our oil temp climbed up to 260 degrees and we got a stop engine warning. Pulled over and temp dropped, light went off. Checked fault codes and only fault was high oil temp, now inactive. Started back up the hill and after a bit it happened again. Stopped in the rest area, it cooled off again. This happened one more time before we got to the top. Oil pressure is fine, oil level is fine. Any idea what is causing this? Cummins ISX 400

Clogged oil cooler, sticky oil thermostat?? Try dropping a gear or two while climbing till u find the culprit
NoCoCraig Thanks this. -
oil temp works in combination with the coolant temp.
climbing that monster is going to raise your water temp. hotter water means hotter oil.
every truck i've been in will hit around 260 on the oil. and i run phoenix to salt lake. A LOT.
it might be a bad sensor to the ecm. or the ecm needs a software upgrade.
summertime is coming. your going to have hotter oil. due to the 100 degree wind blowing underneath the oil pan. instead of the wintery cold air keeping the pan cooler. but not 260 hot unless your climbing out of phoenix. -
'Til you get the problem fixed next time turn your fan on at the bottom and drop a gear or 2 to keep your boost down...high boost builds heat fast.

260... wow!!! I'd be surprised if you didnt break something.

260 degrees is where the sensor triggers the fault so I really doubt any harm is done at that temp, certainly not for only a few seconds. As soon as the light came on we pulled over and as soon as the foot came off the accelerator the temp dropped and the fault cleared.
Thanks for the responses. I will have the oil cooler checked first and then the ecm. We replaced the engine with a used engine 40k ago. They used my ecm from the ISX 400 onto the new(er) ISX 435. Will check that is not the issue. -
never driven a volvo.
just out of curiosity. do they have fan switches? if not, might install one.
i always run with fan on climbing that 170 mile stretch. helps keep the oil temp down around 20 degrees. so that it doesn't hit that 260 mark. -

if you have the variable vane turbo on the isx. that's another good reason to install a switch.
anything you can do to make the turbo last is a worthwhile investment. cuz those things go out frequently.
i turn the fan on to cool the water AND oil down before shutting down the truck. cooler oil increases the oil pressure a little to move the hotter oil out of the turbo. prolongs the life of the bearings.
i heard hot oil will cook and glaze the bearings.
