Who order ice cream in March?

You've never lived up north I take it. It's never the wrong time for ice cream.

I love grabbing a pint of Ben & Jerry's in January. I don't have to worry about it melting on the way from the store to my truck.

Hey hawkjr, I took your advice and filled out the application for the Walmart account out of Gordonsville, mapquested before hand and saw that I was 127 miles from the DC. Got a call from Schneider today, from Green Bay none the less and the very polite recruiter informed me that the extra 37 miles made me ineligible for employment. Went on to tell me that it also made me ineligible for their OTR division as well. Thanks for the info though, it was at least worth the try. If you know any of the brass over there at the DC from when you worked there, give them my info, maybe they can take a second look. Any how, thanks again, I certainly do appreciate it.

Wow...Schneider won't hire you for OTR for your location?!

Sorry if I missed something, would you consider/did you pitch to VW, driving your POV to the Waynesboro terminal at the start of your week, leaving the truck there when you're done, and driving your POV home?

Yeah, it appears that living on the coast of VA is not exactly a hot spot for a truck driving career.
Let me try and catch you up. I applied to VW, was contacted by Jeanne in recruiting, we discussed the position and went from there. A week later she called, told me I had been approved and the driver that would be my trainer was currently with another driver. A week later, she called back, offered me employment, assured me I would be able to drive the truck home for my off time and asked me to submit my notice of resignation to my current employer. We agreed on a start date of 03/10 and she said she would call me back with a date for my physical and drug screen. She called a week later, only to regretfully inform me that the terminal manager informed her that due to my location he would be unable to use me.
I then sucked it up, very disappointed at this point and went in and asked my boss if he would allow me to keep my job and he agreed. A few hours later Jeanne called again and she informed me that VW would hire me if I agreed to drive my POV to the terminal in Waynesboro each week. Now I was in a very bad spot. I had just resigned, found new employment, lost that employment and asked to keep my job all in the matter of 6 days. I chose, to keep my current employment.
Driving is what I want to do, and finding the right fit for me and my family is my goal to achieve this. VW terminal in Waynesboro is 127 miles approximately between my house and the Waynesboro terminal thus I completely understand there decision. I would jump at the opportunity to meet them half way and park the truck half way between the two at a secure location. Then I realize they are a temperature control transport company and that presents an entirely whole other set of responsibilities. The further my search goes, the more I question my decision. It would be a financial sacrifice on either side.
I haven't called VW since, merely assuming the financial sacrifice would be too great for them to be able to justify.

IMO I would do it.... especially if its your first driving job. There's not many companies you could start off with that are good as VW. Its 3 hours one way, most of the time your going to get 48 hours home on weekends. If i was you I would take the deal of driving to Waynesboro every weekend. And with Schneider, you was going to have to leave your truck at the DC, actually its slip seating. Waynesboro is probably the same amount of time from you as Gordonsville

Yeah, I am seriously considering it. It seems I don't exactly live in a trucking company friendly location and for the ones that would give me a job they don't really compare to the opportunity I would have with VW. Going to call Jeanne next week. Thanks again for all your input.

Tidefan. Call Abilene Motor Express in Richmond. We have a whole bunch of folks from Tidewater that run for us. Ask for Sally Arnt. Good luck.

Well, I spoke with a different recruiter with Schneider and got approved for OTR. Had a phone interview on Friday of last week and was told I would be able to bring the equipment home for my home time. The benefits sounded reasonable, the opportunity to invest in a Roth 401k with the existing balance in my state retirement was interesting as well. Was told I would be eligible to move into their L/P on their Choice Board after 6 months of OTR. The only down side that I found was the 3 weeks out and 5 days home. Having a family at home, to place the burden on the wife, who is employed full time, going to school part time and then having to take care of the kids and house all by herself for 21 straight days doesn't really appeal to me.
Tried calling Jeanne in Van Wyk recruiting back, left messages but no response. Oh well, back to the search. I am sure there is a right fit, not necessarily the perfect fit for the time being but the right fit, I just have to find it.
