Wow, this thread cracks me up. I found it on the googly and decided to sign up just to post.

I worked for CHR well over 20 years ago well before this thing called "The Interwebs". No load boards- just a number for drivers to call in and with brokers with pieces of cardboard type paper about 5x7 side with a load hand written in it. One for each load. We went through hundreds of them a week. It had the client name, the date, date/time for load to be picked up and delivered, etc, etc. Now the most interesting piece of info was what the load paid AND what CHR was getting paid by the client. I remember only making a couple hundred bucks per load that was paying the driver, oh $1500, for example. So, I guess it averaged about 15% margin. It really was high volume and low margin. Based upon what I am reading, nothing has changed 20 years later. What is also sad is it looks like the price per mile has stayed the same as well. I was paying trucks maybe .90 cent per mile on long hauls. Maybe more for short runs to surrounding states. I do admit there were a couple shippers that paid well. Those we got some good margin from it. Then again, during certain time of the season, we couldnt even find a truck to haul and were willing to pay almost anything the driver asked and eating a big loss.

Its all supply and demand. If you get a great paying load its probably because you dropped off in a state that has little coming out. I know Texas, Cali, Florida are all high consumption, low producing states. Well, exception of product market. So, if you dropped off in Florida, there are another 100+ trucks just like you looking for a load to get near home so you wouldnt have to deadhead back. That pushed prices down. And not from CHR but from the supplier. Yes, they were the really cheap ones. I remember pretty much only getting offered to broker freight that was bulky, heavy, long to load- pretty much the ##### the big haulers didnt want or wouldnt accept the cheap rate. So, the shipper goes to CHR. And CHR pimps it out to the lowest bidder..ie- trucker. I remember one client only requesting 53 footers. They wanted to cram as much on one truck as possible. I remember other shippers requesting truck got there at night and then loaded all night just to leave in the morning. And shipping to places that was not even a day trip. I remember spending all day looking for a driver to take one dang load. I was willing to pay almost any price. No takers. Its not fun calling the shipper and saying you cant pick the load up, getting yelled at, and then starting it again the next day.

So, I remember trying to sling all that cr*ppy freight to some poor driver just trying to get home or not deadhead empty. Most that understood the game, were happy if they broke even getting that load out of the state I worked in. I guess its case of hate the game, not the player.

I can tell some on here get it and most dont. That was pretty much the same when I was doing this job long ago. I figured with technology, time passed, etc, things had changed. Guess not!

Well, good luck to all out there. Do not think those "loud mouth" college kids got some cushie gig. I was one of them. It was long, tiring, on the phone all day, losing your voice, begging drivers to take a load, hoping drivers would stop yelling, hoping drivers would deliver on time, hoping shippers would allow to pick up the next day because your driver didnt show up, you couldnt find a driver, your driver is late, etc.

At least the drivers, once on the road, is just them, the truck and the road. Doesn't sound so bad sometimes! :)

CH is the most easy going broker out there and quick pay for 1.5% can't be beat. Just don't let them set you up with one person, keep your options open and negotiate some rates. Don't get butt hurt over them trying to get the best rate because your doing the same. I been pulling their freight for 24 years, 4 loads a week and sure glad I have them as a option for loads.
P.S quit using the word backhaul, a load is a load, most brokers see $$$$ when you use that word.
Happy trucking and be safe out there...

If they are so great then why do companies large and small avoid them like they have TB??? Somebody has to be getting the screws put to them somewhere along the way.

I'm just a one man show from booking to billing and I make it work. Those company you speak of has to book the loads just like me so???
Sure stuff happens on both sides {trucker/broker} but you have to take the bad with the good as long as there's more good than bad. BG

I've started to use CH Robinson again on the shipper side of things. Great rates, availability, and customer service. Just wish I could give them more loads!

Work for ch now. There are good ones and bad ones on every side of the coin, from carriers to customers and the middle man too, not all freight is super heavy or cheap it depends on the customer, if you work with a broker they will work for you to find you good loads, I like the owner operators who I can find loads for all week long I get to know you the trucker what kind of freight you like to pull, where you like to go an when you want to be home. My office does our best to accommodate everyone , thank you truckers an shippers / dispatchers etc if we all work together things will work out!
i will say on our behalf we pay detention on loads any time you have to weight over 2 hrs to get loaded, we will give you the info you need to best of our ability we offer up to 50% advance in form of a tcheck , have quick pay (2 days) or ref pay (7-10 days)

Actually when we put you on hold you are asking us to pay more than we have been authorized to pay, and we are asking the acct manager if we can pay what your asking or even split the difference . Sometimes we will loose money just to get freight going an sometimes we won't move it unless it's an 500 winner there's slit of factors that go into it..

You folks at CH are great to work with on the "customer" side. You all really helped me out at the end of last month with great rates and availability. Definitely made me look good in the eyes of the owner of our company. The folks in your Overland Park - Kansas City office are awesome! I have absolutely no complaints and will definitely be giving you more truckload business as it comes my way.
