I think we all agree its a stupid test. You claim amplifiers dont help. If thats the case find a way to cheat. Try calling a head of time (dont give your name) and ask what to expect. If they say they do that test ask to see and outside audiologist. They may allow that, but legally they arnt required to.

I have a hearing problem, and I have never, ever seen any insurance anywhere that covers hearing aids. They don't even pay for a percentage of it. A good set can cost $5,000.
To the op, I am in the same situation. I can hear in conversation well enough, but someone that turns their back and whispers, I cannot hear. Every company that I have ever worked, whether company driver or leasing on, they have always specified to go to THEIR facility of choice.
I am curious if anyone has any other information on this. I assume they can fail you. -
Arnold, TMC and landstar all don't do the wisper test. Maybe hand the doc a 50 when he gives you the hearing test lol....no dont do that. There is no great solution other then trying to cheat. Its a stupid regulation.
I'm aware aids cost 5k+. The good ones are closer to 7K. I havent tried this, but you may be able to pull the Americans with disability act on them. Employers are requiered to provide "reasonable" accommodation for their employees with disabilities. They can not descriminate in the hireing process if that employee could preform the job with reasonable accommodation. Now 5k is a lot more then reasonable, but if you find a cheaper amplifier you like you might be able to get them to pay for it. The op says he doesn't like them but they may work for you. -
The whisper test is arbitrary... I failed mine, went to the audio room and passed with flying colors. The med-cert isn't interested in the high frequencies, for truckers... it's the low ones that count and if you fail those, your almost stone deaf anyway.

I have no problems with the low tones. That's good to know.

stone def with the low tones. isn't just about any sound you hear EVERY day LOUDER then low tones?
A WHISPER. REALLYYYYYYY -
I am nervous about this. I passed a DOT physical once a couple years ago. The phrase was either "What is your birthday" or "What is your first name".. can't remember. She had to say it a smidge louder and I got it the second time. I do fine in conversational settings but like someone else said, turn your back and whisper into your hand and I don't see how ANYONE can make that out?

I found an audiologist that had a set of used hearing aids for $1000.00, I bought them and passed my hearing test. The nurse whispered "I wish it would snow", I turned around and said to her, that is the phrase you want to use for a truck driver??? I passed my eye test, blood pressure, and sugar tests. When the doctor examined me he saw my scar on my chest for my open heart surgery I had 21 years ago. He has now disqualified me until I get a stress test, and a complete workup by a cardiologist. They don't care that this is going to cost me close to $5000.00. Plus the fact I am out of work now
