Today at the steel mill watched a 250 - 275 lbs 55-60 year old guy walk backward off of his trailer. He was trying to hurry and throwing his chains. He had thrown the chain that was going to be at the front of the trailer first, and when throwing the others was walking backwards, caught his foot on that front chain and fell off on his back and shoulder. He was hurting but with help from myself and a couple of others was able to get back on his feet. The mill sent a medic and took him to Triage. If he didn't break anything he is going to be hurting tomorrow.
We all gotta be careful and don't get in such a hurry that we hurt ourselves or someone else. This guy was not a green horn he was an old hand with a lot of experience. When we start thinking it will never happen to me, that seems to be when something happens.
Be safe!

Something similar happened to my bf about a mth ago. He was helping another guy secure his load and the trailer was wet. His foot slipped and he fell backwards off the trailer. No EMS was called but he's still having some pain in his back from it(dummy won't go to the dr).

The 5th stage of competence is complacency, but we can get too focused on a task and IME it is always surprising how fast some things can go all to fecal matter. Or, you can get on auto-pilot and get to thinking of something else entirely, past or future events. The brain is a strange thing. Fantastically capable, woefully fallible, and both simultaneously!
He's going to be hurting longer than tomorrow, something like that at that age and size can easily render you ~crippled for life with soft tissue injuries. Let's hope for the best.Little Eddy Thanks this. -
Yea had my hand in rub rail climbing on and slipped and about snapped my finger, still hurts.
rank Thanks this. -
(dummy won't go to the dr). Is this his user name? We would like to ask him some questions!

Busted my right wrist coming out of a tractor with H.U.A. Jumped down and landed on a rock, instead of rolling into the fall, tried to catch myself. Stupid. Painful. I actually had several physical injuries, that last year before I retired. It was TIME TO GO!

Been there done that and I don't do it anymore LOL.

I fall all the time. I fell off my open top Hiel the other day.10 ft. fall.
No pleasant! Boss man gave me a paid day off work today to try to recuperate so I don't have to file a workmens comp claim.
Lot's of pain, but slowly getting better- Good reminder MC.
I'm a greenhorn to this bis. Been in it for 7 months- and not afraid to admit it. Granted; my step was covered in ice- I genuinely couldn't help it! Tried to climb and fell. Pain! Hurt! ouch! OhGodmybackisinagony!
At any rate, I'm finding this business is like anything else. Get complacent and get killed.
Beware drivers!
