Reading a current thread on cost of inframing a Cummins, got me thinking about the same thing for my MBN. I have searched the forum, but didn't get a lot of results, so I thought I would do a post here specific to the MBN. There are a lot of us with this engine, that are getting real close to where rebuild time is coming
so I think it might be very helpful to get some cost ideas now before it happens. I do realize it can vary, depending on how extensive the rebuild is. For my purposesI don't need to discuss ecm, turbo, and other tune characteristics, those are all covered many times in other threads. My main 2 areas of concern are the genuine catparts to do an inframe, and what should the labour run? I thank everyone who can give some useful $ specific reply here. Rebuilding one of these is most likely thebiggest operating cost an o/o will experience during the time they have the truck, and knowing in advance roughly what it's going to run, can mean the differencebetween make or break when the time comes.

Around me theyll quote about 40 hours labour. If you do it with cat parts and replace water pump injectors and turbo to get full warranty you'll be well over 20 grand

The quote was around $19,000 but my out the door price ended up being $24,257.30 on 8-15-12 when they platinum inframed mine. That included 9.75% state sales tax also you may not have to pay that depending on what state you use. If you want to look at the invoice I can email it to you. Total cost was actually around $27,500 with other parts I provided. My cam lobes and some of the journals were screwed up which they said normally cams were good to re-use. They recommended replacing it so I did, that was a $928.17 extra. My compressor was shot and I got ripped on that big time from what I've learned here how they way overcharge for compressors. It's not a typical one cylinder compressor you see on most C-15's, it has two cylinders (part # OR-9900) that was a whopping $2,000 for that one. I also opted for an extra year of unlimted miles warranty above the 2 years it came with. That was money that I should have kept. Hindsight is always 20/20. Two years is plenty if you don't turn a lot of miles. As I recall he said single turbos flat labor to inframe was 42 hours and Acerts were 46 hours. Might have been 40 and 44 I can't remember. That's going to be the same in most any dealer type shop. He said sometimes they might have 50 hours in one. Of course there's probably some who can come in under 42 (or 40 or whatever it was) but 42 is what the labor will be regardless. They can break down the cost of the kit, labor and everything if you just go talk to a service manager. They will explain in detail exactly what they do but will normally not mention things not included in the overhaul, unless you ask questions about that.

Cat offers 4 levels of overhaul for a C15 MBN each kit builds upon the previous kits parts offering as follows:

    1. Bronze Kit - Basic inframe kit with no hard parts (gaskets, seals and O-Rings) ... No Core Charge

    2. Silver Kit - Same components as the Bronze kit but adds a Cylinder Pack (Less the Connecting Rods) ... No Core Charge

    3. Gold Kit - Same as the Silver but complete cylinder packs including connecting rods ... Core Charge Applies

    4. Platinum Kit - Adds a Reman Head, injections and a water pump ... Core Charge Applies

If you have a CAT dealer preform the labor, when they are done with the build, the engine qualifies for a 4yr Overhaul Warranty. A few points to mention, there are a list of excluded components (ie. no ecm, sensors, jake brakes, ect) as well as the build profile of a dealers overhauled engine has a list of inspected components that are reinstalled back in the motor (essentially used parts with XYZ miles on them).

Another option to throw out there are the factory reman CAT Engines. The build profile does not re-use inspected components, they are either replaced with reman or upgraded to new. As well as the entire engine is protected under a 2 year warranty that covers parts, labor and towing. Essentially your getting a crate engine.

Kills me to say this ....... But given the quality of cat parts lately I'd be tempted to look at aftermarket parts. :( :(

You're right, 3 year unlimited miles was standard part of the deal, I paid about $800 to add a 4th year unlimited miles to it. I figure at that point this truck will make somebody local pulling hoppers a decent work truck and I'll be upgrading.

One thing to keep in mind about them inspecting and re-using old parts. They do inspect everything and there's nothing wrong with re-using parts that pass inspection. Everything that's inspected is covered by the warranty if it does fail. Everything inspected and passed is listed on the invoice as will be anything they recommended replacing that wasn't.
