I rack my brain about the same thing. I know rates are probably all over the board though, so if you're making money run it. That's how I roll, I'm not cheap I alway hit my customers and feel them out, sometimes I get it sometimes I get well... that's kinda strong.
fair rate?

Permits don't list every single piece of freight, only the oversize portion(If I'm correct)
-
that how i beleive it should be done but when i look at the board 2hrs later the load is gone that means somebody agreed to haul it for whatever was offered by the broker.
-
with so much regulations and laws in place i dont wanna take a chance.got a $1000 ticket in jacksonville last year for being 3 inches over the permits dimensions.dot officer came out and measured my load and handed me the ticket with a big smile on his face
-
Just measure multiple times and double and triple check your permits and you will be fine!!!! Hopefully you dont get screwed to hard on the escort side of things.

Hey Zin,
Glad to hear about your picking up your authority.
I dunno if this will help, but here's 2 cent's from another portion of the country;
In and around Cleveland I know and talk to several LOCAL stepedeckers a week at the local truck stops. Please note I have no experience in stepdecking, I run a 48' spread loading binded corrugates 1 day out of the week on my local route so I typically get a chance to chat with them. Most guys are talking about city/state/federal/government work and saying they're getting between $2.50-$4.00 a mile to run various sets of equipment.
If I didn't make it clear enough- This is in Cleveland, all based on local and all word of mouth. It could all be B.S. or total lies- I really dunno. It's just some word of mouth I've picked up at a few Chevron pumps while filling my PB. -
What states require two escorts for only 12'7 wide. Va, md, nj theirs no escort needed. Probably need one to get out of ny on the bridge but not 100% sure.
-
I am surprised you dont need any escorts in Jersey. I dont guess you would need two anywhere but, I am not 100% sure. I dont travel the 95 corridor with OS loads so I am not sure. You might make out pretty good then. Usually the way I provide any customer a rate is by FIRST finding out where I need escorts and how many are required then figure your rate based on that.
-
any time a broker has called to about a Jamaica load they have said name your price.
-
I believe you need special permits to get off the island. You also need NYC permits that will probably take a couple days to get and require you to operate at night. IIRC these are required for any trucks over 50' long.
