what does his PCP say about this? Research sleep apnea. find out the entirety of symptoms. Does he have any of these? Answer honsetly, because if he does in fact have apnea its putting undue stress on his heart and likely raising hid BP among other things. If he doesnt then I woud suggest a visit to PCP to discuss this very issue and have them sign off on no study.

I was diagnosed prior to driving. Life saver for sure.

well as far as I know, for now anyway, the call for study is suggested or recommended by FMCSA not required. Since he does have a few of them , I think its wise to take that up specifically with Primary Care Physician. With Ins this shouldnt be a cost to you if he does need the study based on your docs recommendation. Same with the machine, its a medical device. My ins covered all of it. Nothing out of pocket. But it would be smart to check that out with your ins company beforehand. If your Doc says its not warranted at this time, they should be willing to state that in writing and then he can present that to the next doc who does the physical or just have your doc do it to begin with. Download the necessary forms form FMCSA website. After May 1 2014 all Docs need to be on the fmcsa registry to preform dot physicals.

How exactly is he built? overweight, out of shape kind of thing? thats one negative about assessing off of an arbitrary set of criteria. Doesnt take into account actual health status or fitness.

I had to get a sleep study done before I went back to a previous employer because of neck size, no other symptoms, was diagnosed with non obstructed, partially restricted mild apnea. I had to get a machine and use it for two weeks before I could go to work with the carrier I was going to, the carrier I was leaving didn't care about the diagnosis and I could have stayed there. Long story short I was out of work about a month, but use the machine about 98% of the time now. Have switched to a new carrier in the past year and there was no problem as long as I use the machine.
