Hello Brand new to the world of trucks. Im a big fan of the older Trucks such as the old 281, 351 needle nose petes and the W900's kenworths and many more. I really want to learn more about the engines of these trucks but unfortunately I don't know where to start. Which trucks used which Brand engines? Ive seen all sorts of trucks use Detroits, Cummins and Cats. Was the engine optional? Because ive seen peterbilts, Kenworth and Macks ect with all sorts of engines in them. Did the company have a stock engines when they were built? like did Peterbilts always come with CATS in them? Or did the customer get to choose what engine was going to go into it? Trying to study up on the old antique trucks and there engines but its difficult to follow when engine in the truck keeps changing all the time. I could be studying an old pete, ill look a different one that is the same model but maker of the engine changes. One may have a cummins and the other a CAT. Why is this? and also what were the most popular engines of the old antique trucks? There are so many and im trying to narrow down which ones to research. Help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

You need to join ATHS.org. They have a great forum. Thousands of collective years in the industry and oodles of archived info.

You could, and still can order a truck with whatever engine / transmission / rear end option that was available at the time. Pretty customizable at the time as they are now. Most common brand-brand combos were probably Mack truck, engine, trans, and rears (purebred bulldog) and Chevrolet/GMC with Detroit engines, all GM products. Another thing about the older trucks you mentioned is there's a good probability they have had some if not all of the power train upgraded / changed over the life of the truck. Ex there's plenty of older Pete's and KW's out there running around with a B or E model Cat or Big Cam Cummins. Like Semi Crazy said there's a ton of info with the ATHS, probably more so than on here simply because it's dedicated to the older trucks.

Another good source is if you can track down some old sales brochures, they will usually list out the options the factory offered without having a fully custom order.

KW use to say that the only thing that is standard is the hood emblem everything else is an option.
    Just a thought!
