With no APU's in tractors, is there anything in place that will enable you to have a fridge, and/or microwave to save on food and drinks while on the road for extended periods of time?

All company trucks are equipped with a large inventor. Wanna say 1500 watt, but might be 1100 or 1200. Either way, they provide plenty of juice to run a microwave, tv, or small fridge.
With a fridge or electric cooler, of course you'll have to idle up the truck more often to keep the batteries charged.
If running bunk heater, might kick off the fridge, or might wake up cold, when low voltage kicks off.
I prefered to wake up cold, then fire up the heater.

We have inverters provided. My 1.8cuft fridge will stay powered for about 20 hours before tripping the low battery alarm. It'll stay cold another half day after that, but 1/2 hour of pto idle gives me enough juice for another 20 hours...

Thank you for your response. I believe I'm over-thinking all of this. I will be getting my CDL-A in a month or two. I'm torn between two companies. Conway TL and Celadon. Both run pretty much the same tractors, but Conway seems to be a much better company as far as pay, benefits, and treatment of drivers. Celadon has APU's standard in every tractor. Neither of the companies give a lot of information on their websites, although Conway seems to have a bit more on theirs.

As for heat, I want as little as possible while I'm sleeping. I sleep 365 days with 2 fans blowing on me set to high. I say I'm over-thinking because I'm more familiar with APU's. But I want to be comfortable while on the road since the tractor I'm driving will be my home for most of the year. You said I would have to idle up truck more to keep batteries charged. Are trucks set-up to automatically start an idle when charging is needed? I know there's a name for it but I can't come up with it. Your view(s)? Or anyone else is welcome to jump in, thanks!

The fridge I have the the black & decker compressorless model from walmart. I also did have all 4 truck batteries replaced 6 months ago -- before that I was getting 6-10hours.

Many of those coolers are energy hogs. They don't pull as many watts as a fridge, but if they aren't thermostatically controlled they run continuously whereas the fridge cycles on only when needed. It is needed more in the summer when batteries have more power, & less in the winter when batteries are weakest.

If it is above 70 you can just idle. Below that your fans should be plenty. I like it cold when I sleep & have a clip-on DC fan for when its 60-70* and a bigger A/C fan I use when temps are above 75. Above 80 I just idle unless I know it will cool off in an hour.

None of the trucks I've seen will automatically charge the batteries. I know it is an option, and maybe the newest batch of trucks have it, but not mine.

    frankgh and Swamprat55 Thank this.
