LOL. Not a dumb question but I highly doubt that you will get a lot of responses because of a couple of reasons
1. you didnt use the search button
2. you didnt provide enough info for someone to give you a good answer
3. as an owner op you should be know that per mile pay is subjective
4. if you gotta ask this question you probably should not be an owner op
5. the post is a little confusing as to if you asking what a driver should be paid or owner op according to the heading
With all that aside coupled with the fact that often ask dumb questions I will try to provide you with a starting point.
Pay per mile should be based on a couple of things from an owner stand point
1. time on truck
2. distance
3. area
4. appt times
5. type of freight
Pay per mile to a driver should be based on a couple of things
1. degree of travel
2. experience of driver
3. attention to detail
4. dot inspections
5. communication/flexiablity
I keep in mind that most drivers can make 600 to 800 a week plus benefits so I try to be somewhat mindful of that when determining a fair weekly rate.
Hopes this helps you if not someone................
Sorry I didnt pay attention to the forum that this was listed in thought it was ask an o/o. If you are a freight broker asking the question I must take a different approach to determine pay per mile
1. frequency of run
2. weight
3. time on truck
4. safety rating
5. area of drop
6. profit marginLast edited: Mar 20, 2014

5 bucks a mile
BigBadBill and Foxcover Thank this. -
for most o/o leased onto a carrier (not running own authority.)1.30/mile is about the min you can make money on. You wont make much. 1.60 is decent, but still kinda low. 1.80 and up is where you start to make decent money. Like cdub 304 said there are a lot of varibles. If you do nothing but short runs these number need to be higher since you wont make as many miles.
