Freight rates are basically the same they were 4 years ago. That's the problem, and a lot of customers will not pay the fuel surcharge. We're at 30% FSC and a lot of people laugh at us for even quoting it.

So are you going to continue to haul cheap freight? There has to be a way to get them to understand that fuel is now the largest percentage of a guys expenses. Whats not to understand, when you are spending .80 cents per mile, just in fuel, and they expect people to haul for $1.20 or less. WRONG!
Not enough room there to profit anything, if the guy is maintaining his truck to meet DOT standards and to keep it on the road. CAN'T Happen.
So its time to put it in Black and White for them. Show them the operating cost for one truck, and make them understand. Talking to them will do no good, put it in writing, it will hit home better. -
Im a company driver and Ill be sitting most of the day today. Though its not my choice, (the load Im on doesnt pick up till later today) Im not complaining. I can join in with everyone even if its not on purpose.

No, we don't run cheap freight, and you're absolutely right about the black and white... Our customer base is probably 80% changed from 4 years ago. We have shifted our focus to meet demands, and our needs. Our base is made up of customers who WILL pay FSC, and who understand that we don't run for what we did 4-5 years ago. Ony poorly run companies will have one or two big customers, or not alter business plans and gain better customers to stay viable.
