I was just offered a job as an Intermodal driver for JB Hunt. I live in central Minnesota, any advice on working in this division or area? ie: how they are to work for, pay, home time, available work in this area.

Yeah it only took a few days. I'm just looking into a position where I am only required to drive. For 12 years I have been unloading the trucks myself. Also need a company with good insurance.

Watch out for the bait & switch. They'll get you to orientation and tell you that you'll have to go OTR.

2boys2dogs and full speed Thank this.

JB's a fail ticket they're a big daq company as well. You know there has got to be somthing wrong with a company that hires about 500 drivers a week. You'll probably be in orientation with about 50 people.

I drive for JB, 7 yrs now, all intermodal out of Chicago. I was talking to a driver at our yard in Cedar Rapids who lives in Minnesota and does intermodal as well. In a nutshell, you live in Minnesota, but you will drive IA, MN, WI, and Northern IL and you will hit the rails in St Paul and Chicago. Some weeks you'll be in St Paul on a daily basis, other weeks in Chicago, and other other weeks a mix of the two going to the rails. I have never heard of someone being baited to go OTR. Your dispatcher/fleet manager will most likely be out of Chicago. Though I heard talk that they are thinking about moving the IA/MN driver's dispatchers to Cedar Rapids, but that's just talk right now.

Yes you will be in an orientation of about 50, but eventually that will whittle down to a dozen or so cuz people cannot pass the background verification (work experience or lied on app), drug test (it's a hair sample), road test, or physical.

What is the driving test like? I've heard they don't let you float the gears, is that true?

If it's in Chicago and that they haven't changed it since I took it seven yrs ago, you take a right out of the terminal, go a few blocks and take another right. (Get the hint, they like to do right hand turns), then you swap out with another driver. I don't know about floating the gears, you can always ask.

But things they watch for (but not limited to): following distance; whether or not you block intersections; how close you are to the vehicle in front of you when stopped (stay far enough back that you could pull out from behind them if need be); and how often check your mirrors.

For the backing test portion: make sure you walk around (you know Get Out And Look), honk your horn before backing, and make sure you have your seat belt on (I got dinged for that one).

2boys2dogs look I know you want to hear some positive things but its the truth. Flat out this guy coming on is only hear to defend Jb and he sounds like a dispatcher or a recruiter. More like a recruiter if anything.
This guy's been here since 09 and only has 51 post, probably all of them trying to get guys like you to join. After all, someone's got to cover the bull #### and all hands on deck would welcome it.
Use your head, if you go into orientation it's daq reportable but if you call and just say you got a job you cannot refuse your good no daq/ no Jbull.
What you might want to do is check your local news paper for local jobs, or what a lot of guys do on hear is start a thread requesting info on jobs in your area.
You got 12 years of experience why through it out to JB it's like throwing out pearls to swine. I bet they'd probably get an erection just thinking about reporting #### on your daq. JB's always gonna be there you can call them back any time and they'd still take you in.
Why rush in to dive in the sesce pool, Once your in, you'll be up to you neck. Just be sure to cover your nose.:dontknow:
