Mr. Piserchia, it seems you have opened quite a can of worms here!
Other comenters have responded point by point to you're commentary. I'm not going to restate what they've said, but know that they are correct.
Instead, I'd like to take a moment to answer your original question, the title of this hotly contested entry. Just exactly who do truckers think they're kidding anyway? Maybe it's themselves.
For decades this industry has been in a downward spiral, and yet the only help it has recieved has always come in the form of legislation and regulation designed to benefit only large trucking companies while leaving small business truckers out in the cold.
While competition within the industry has increased to unfathomable, and highly damaging, levels since dergulation, the only "relief" has come in the form of easing entry into the labor market. The result is ever-decreasing freight rates, which adjusted for inflation, mean truck drivers today earn far less than they did in the 1970's and 80's.
Many trucking companies utilize "predatory hiring practices" which entice new entrants to the industry and then keep them chained to the wheel of the truck through exorbitant training cost obligations. Ridiculous lease/purchase programs offer the American dream of owning your own truck and being your own boss. Of course, those programs are designed for the operators to fail, and end up with blown credit and no truck.
Freight brokers can take anywhere from 10 all the way to 60% of the fright bill. With so much competition, there is little negotiating room left for truckers to run profitable businesses.
Fuel surcharges, originally implemented as a way to recoup the rising cost of fuel, are rarely passed on in full to the person actually paying for the fuel.
Regardless of the fault in an accident, which 4 out of 5 are not attributable to the truck driver, truckers are often blamed, and nearly always sued.
Truckers often have to work twice (if not three times) as hard as the average American worker to bring home the same pay. Up to, and even beyond, 40 hours a week of a trucker's time goes uncompensated. They are not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act. There is no overtime for truckers.
Trucker's perform a vital service for this country. It's not an easy job, and it's not an easy lfe. It means spending days and weeks out on the road, away from loved ones. It means being villainized at every turn by the press. It means having to keep track of and comply with a myriad of varying rules and regulations from different states and localities.
So who are truckers kidding? Maybe you don't believe they deserve to earn a decent living like everyone else. You say you don't like trucks, and therefore by extension, their drivers. Is it any wonder that many truck drivers don't much care for lawyers either?

People like him amaze me, they open mouth insert foot and never think about how stupid they sound. And this guy is educated??? Bet he never stopped to think that degree he got from a cracker jack box was brought in by a truck. And I wonder did he ever stop to think that most of the things on the train are brought in by a truck??? I'm not a trucker but my boyfriend is and I have to say to all truckers there are alot of us out here in the real world that admire and appreciate everything you guys and gals do for us.:biggrin_25514: Keep those wheels turning.

    Dear Readers:
I want to thank everyone for their responses.
I am, however, disappointed to see that with the notable exception of Viga, you have uniformly lived down to my expectations with the crude, rude and rather emotional invective launched my way.
My intent with this posting was to seek insights into possible approaches to lessen the pain at the pump we all are experiencing.
I respectfully urge that insults and attacks are not the answer.
Perhaps the power of the ballot can assist. I mean that for those of you who are registered voters, do show up at the polls in November.
Cast a no vote against every member of Congress who refuses to end these stupid wars. They are the main cause of our present oil inflation spiral.
Think carefully also about whether you want a president who thinks the Hundred Years' War should not be a relic from the middle ages.
For those of you who are not registered, drive (a car, please) to your registration place and then do show up in November when your views can genuinely be influential.
To do otherwise or nothing, will surely see the cost of a barrel of oil next year at least 5 times what it was 5 years ago, rather than 3 times now.
That is something to be angry about!
I close by again expressing my appreciation for all of you efforts and thoughts, and again recommend that you do slow down. You will visit the filling station less often, and may see a pleasant surprise in your next insurance premium.
    JJP

    What a twit.

Like we don't already vote. The problem with voting is, you have to choose between the lesser of the evils. They're all evil, it's just how much can you tolerate. We've voted before for senators, governors, presidents, vice-presidents, and all the other offices, for people who've "promised" to do something, but when they get in office they suddenly "forget" what they've promised.

So maybe he should clue us in on how we should be voting since we seem to be so utterly stupid and uneducated.

    What a twit.

Does anyone share my sense of irony at the sight of this lawyer crying a river over truckers insisting the government stand up for the people?

Let's look at the lawyer's oath to see if this guy is qualified to even be in business:

    1. I will personally and professionally comply with the high standards of conduct imposed on members of the bar. - Declaring that he does not like trucks doesn't seem professional to me.

    2. I will not, for personal reasons, reject the cause of the defenseless or oppressed. - Hmmm...isn't he slamming those who are oppressed?

    3. I will never attack the honor or reputation of a party or witness unless the justice of the case demands it. - Is there some cause he is fighting for here. Is there justice in slandering a group of individuals who are standing up for what they believe in?

    4. I will practice law civilly and avoid offensive conduct. - Wow! I think he totally missed this one!

    5. I will pursue my client's claims with truth and honor. - I'm not sure anyone will ever see honor coming from this man's lips again!

    6. I will pursue a claim only if it is just, and will offer a defense only if it may be honestly argued under law. - Have truckers given him claim to cry his own river? Perhaps he's standing up for the legal community since truckers have given him reason?

    7. I will promote respect for courts and court officers. - Respect isn't what's being promoted here.

    8. I will support the Constitution of the United States and the state I represent. Maybe his state put him up to the slander.

    9. I will never mislead a judge or jury, and will never delay a case for money or malice. - Nope, he's not misleading anyone here!

This lawyer reminds me of a joke:

How many personal injury attorneys does it take to change a light bulb?

Three--one to turn the bulb, one to shake him off the ladder, and the third to sue the ladder company.

Any thoughts, besides, "This is what Law School pays for?"
