I had a Cobra 25 NW given to me the other day free of charge so of course I accepted. The thing received ok but had an obvious blown meter light. Replaced that no problem and started going through it. The volume crackles and goes in and out so I'm thinking replace or try to disassemble and clean the knob. I'm able to transmit but the audio sounds very low when listening to it on my 29 which was parked in the driveway no matter which direction I adjust the audio (VR5). It also seems a little distorted. The needle keys up only around a 1 on the internal meter and has no forward swing but actually swings ever so slightly backwards when transmitting. It pegs the meter on my 29 when sitting in front of the house with the audio adjusted either direction if that means anything. I've tried different mics with the same results and adjusted the mic gain wife open. D9 is in tact and no obvious internal adjustments could be noted;the case screws didn't even show any scuff marks from being opened previously. If anyone recognizes these symptoms and can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I'm not sure how blown finals act but the thing does transmit somewhat. I have a mosfet 520 kit I could install but not sure if it would help. It was a free radio and seems to be a good learning experience before taking it to a cb shop and throwing money into it. Thanks in advance for any thoughts and input.

I'd replace the audio IC if you were sure the finals were good.. It's cheap enough and effect both transmit and receive audio. To confirm bad finals check it out on a watt meter. You could pin a close by unit with less than a watt. If you have less than a watt... finals. Another thought... Have you checked the SWR? If it's really high could cause what you are seeing.

If it is the finals, as is likely, good time to consider a MOSFET upgrade. The 25's often get higher watts than the 29's with the MOSFET's installed. Seen a 25 get a real 40 watts with MOSFET's.

    Good Luck!

Before you do anything, get it to someone who can actually see what's going on and hear it all on a dummy load. It may be something simple and nothing to do with the RF or anything else other than a good alignment that is needed.

In case anyone has any similar problems, I fixed it. I used a mosfet irf 520 kit and installed it. Apparently the final was bad. I adjusted the modulation and this radio can talk, and loud! I'm definitely impressed with this mod. I do have a new problem however. The volume was very scratchy so I removed the knob to clean it out. I used a 3/8 deep socket to remove it which was a very tight fit in to the opening. The volume works fine but now half of the night watch face plate won't light. From the volume knob to the meter won't turn on, only bits and pieces if I press on the face plate part will intermittently light up. It also has a slight hum when it's on. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me knew. Thanks
