How about if OOIDA takes that $5 million, the rest of us pitch in what we can, and we all do the only thing with the money which could possibly be cost effective - buy some politicians. If we're going to win this fight, we have to do it the true blue American way.

Really?
If you know you will be fined for leaving things unfixed - you just might get them fixed post haste instead of ignoring the problem.
Or, we could do away with the fines.
Just put the truck and driver OOS until the problem is fixed. I'm sure that would be a lot cheaper for the driver, especially if they are pulled over along a long and lonely stretch.
I think that is one of the most ignorant (and I'm being very polite in my wording here) statements I've ever heard. -
I'd have to agree with GPSMAN to a certain extent... Think about it this way... If you have a clearance light out on your truck or trailer and you get a $100+ fine for it.. Are you telling me they are giving you a $300 ticket for being unsafe even tho that light has nothing to do with safety.. It's not a brake light, turn signal or important running light.. Are people not going to see your truck because you have a roof light out??? Highly unlikely... If you do have a turn signal/stop light out what's the big deal with pulling you over and telling you to fix it, if you have a replacement with you then fix it and then continue on your way.. The cop doesn't know if it just went out or if it was out hours ago, you as a driver don't know you could leave after doing your circle check and less then 1 mile down the road it might stop working but your not going to know this because you are no where near the point of stopping for a in-trip inspection.
Here is another thought.. What is giving you hefty fines for something minor going to do??? Your giving money to the government because you have a light out.. Is giving the government going to fix your light??? What exactly are they doing with the money that you give them because you had a light out??? Feeding the politicians pockets... Handing out money doesn't make your truck safe.. Fixing the issue make's the truck safe....!!!!! And don't tell me giving money will teach you to fix your truck or it will cost you more fines.. That's a load of BS... I don't need to give away money to teach me that I should stop my truck ever min to check to make sure all my lights are working.. Sometimes #### happens..WitchingHour and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
I fix all as soon as I hear or see they are out fixed one in two seconds when dot said it was out rough roads had knocked it loose it was working when I left 25 min later pulled over and well. It dont matter it was not working when I was pulled over common sense if all thats needed is reach though and replug it is more than likely just do to poor maintance on the roads not driver lack of safety

Someone earlier hit it right on the head, about showing the importance of the trucking industry, then shut all the trucks down for like 2-3 weeks, let the shelves start to go bare then start running ads about how trucks are important.
also, every time there is an accident most times we are told or read it was a truck vs 4 wheeler or the 4 wheeler vs the trucks....ok I won't be stereotyping (but yes there are trucks vs trains but I won't get into that one now.) back to point..... Statistics show that cars are mostly at fault, but what isn't told is if those cars that are involved how many actually hold a cdl?
i would assume that 4 wheelers that are involved are mostly non cdl drivers vs cdl drivers?
