    Hi again folks,

I keep reading about the good money being made by those working many hours of overtime as a driver in the oil fields. A recent post described a water truck driver on the clock for 17+ hours.

Could someone who has done such hours explain them to me? I've read that much work in the fields involves at least as much waiting as driving. Does that mean one can nap in the cab? I hope that's not a foolish question, but the answer makes all the difference in whether such a workload is possible for many people.

It really all depends. I've done several 17 hour days and always included some type of wait whether to load or unload. I have heard of instances where at least in big companies you might break down on your 13th hour. Then you have to call dispatch, have someone come get you, etc. I've also seen where you just run for 17 hrs straight just regular load and unload. I've also seen where a pump will go down on your truck and you have to again wait.

These are just straight driver job examples. Vacuum, water, crude, etc.

The question is pretty broad ranging in that almost everyone in oilfield operates a CMV at some point.

A member of a frac crew might drive a rig from the yard to the site, work 14hrs and drive back.

There is a lot of nap time on many jobs. Hauling sand we might haul 14 hr for 1-6 days. And one breakdown on well and you could sit there for up to 3 days while they brought in coiled tubing or others. Same with frac hands. They just drive to job. Set up. There are several hours between frac stages. And that could be one to 42 . At least 42 was the longest I was on. Luckily that was around Bryan TX so lots of places to fuel/eat. And lots of folks "exaggerate" a wee bit. Oil field trash lie almost as much as fisherman. There will be brutally long hot/cold days and there will be real easy ones.

Many times we would stop driving at the 14th hour and have the next shift come swap us out. Those days I would be on the clock for 17-19 hours. An $ 800.00+ OT day is nice.

To the OP some companies run illegal.

Or you stay on private ground the whole time and avoid dot regs.

I wasn't so much asking how one can get away with working that long as I was asking how it is physically or mentally possible to stay focused for that long a period on a regular basis.

It involves periods of absolute boredom.

If you're lucky you are in a good cell reception and have 3G.. else , you'd better bring a book with you. Day cabs are NOT the best way to catch a nap, even with a rag bag as pillow...
Had to stay at a location one night untill the other driver was done with his shift to drive me 'home' .. My truck had problems and was to stay on location.

An other time was blocked in BIg Lake because of the Ice Storm, I didnt really planned on spending the whole day here with 2 other drivers, a pickup came to our 'rescue' - ice been starting to be bad only around 0600 - right when we were supposed to head to San Angelo; needless to say we told the supervisor we weren;'t going to work that night (which ended being no- one out anyways because of weather).

as of the long hours, for me it goes pretty fast , when I do on a regular basis 14h. drive to loc, check the levels, get a load - do some paperwork, fiddle with your phone, drive to disposal, grab a bite, drive to location, and Repeat 6 times (about 2 hours rounds, except for 1st and last that are about 3 to 3/3h30)
