Here is a weird one. I'm New to Detroit's. I just noticed today there is tons of engine noise coming threw the air filter. Not sure how to explain. It's a real deep sound almost like an exhaust manifold leak or something. That's why I was snooping around there is I thought it was an exhaust leak. But it's coming from air filter. Loud and very noticeable. Even worse if I pull the air filter. Any clues. Is it normal or is it my turbo.

If it's kind of a chunk, chunk, chunk sound, you may have some intake valves not seating because they're too tight. Series 6o just about has the market cornered on tightening up intake valves. If it hasn't had the overhead ran in a long time, just hope you don't have a carbon build up and have to do it about three times to beat the carbon loose so they'll seat.

I would agree with what beenjammin says.

X3 in checking the valve adjustment. The intakes tighten up on them.

Thanks everyone. I have also noticed the Jake's are now really weak and it idles like carp. Did take it to a shop and the guy said the noise is normal and the rough idle and weak Jake's are the injector harness. I politely said thanks and drove away. I know my truck and the sound is not normal.

Run the over head. It's a very simple job that won't take more than two hours. Only special tools needed is the injector height one. Can get it at Detroit for under a hundred bucks. Other than that it's just a few wrenches and a feeler gauge.

Wow, he must be a great mechanic. I've been doing this 25 years and I can't tell a bad harness by listening to it. It could be a harness issue, but if the check engine light is not coming on, I'd say probably not. You're probably best off bring it to a reputable Detroit shop and and for a overhead adjustment and ask them to check everything really close under the valve cover while they're in there.

Ya it was the freightliner shop in tunkhannock pa. The service dept lead got in, pegged the engine about 5 times then said noise in air box normal, bad injector harness. Asked him about the Jake's and he said it's also cause of harness. Quoted me 4-6 hours labor and that's when I left. I don't mind paying but I do mind paying when I feel like it's a guess. No real diagnosis or tests.
