Online Applications

Maybe if people stop working for these company's they'll get the message when they have no drivers.

So far I've been asked four times tonight for my SSN from online applications via Indeed.com listings.
With all the identify theft, unless a business is seriously considering hiring you, what people should be asking is: Why should I give strangers my SSN before I get a chance to interview them as they interview me?

I've already skipped over four jobs tonight because of this. It's not right people. There needs to be a law passed to prevent this.
This country is going right down the tubes, and no one seems to care. Didn't the gov years ago say SS numbers would never be used for anything other then your identity? Today it's being used for everything. And then the passive people always say, "well just buy Life Lock". Like everyone has money to throw away.
Before you know it you'll be paying a bill for 20 separate insurance services to protect every aspect of your life. It's sad.

 

If someone wants to find your SSN they will not be looking at online applications for work. It doesn't give them the information they are looking for. It gives them Social Security Numbers of people who are out of work. Why would they want that? As a criminal, I know these things.

By Law, a Social Security Number is not to be used as an ID. So you are not required to give it to anyone until you have to fill out a W2 form.

Remember also when your id is stolen and your bank account is emptied, you have not lost anything, the bank has. The world is not as scary of a place as they would have you believe. Too many cops, too many firemen, too many teachers, but the political types want you to think we need more with higher pay.

 

I'm a computer guy, and I know a little bit about online security. I agree, they don't look at online applications. What they do is, they break into company servers. Servers store user information. The more places your SSN is scattered about, the higher the chances your identity will be targeted in the large and growing pool of Identity's. Company's should not ask this personal info until you're being interviewed face to face. I'm sorry, but these company's are making it mandatory for people to enter their SSN's on internet applications before they'll even consider looking at the application. And if someone's computer is infected with a trogen, or keylogger, they're selling their soul to the devil.

Just because someone is out of work doesn't mean they don't have money and investments, or personal records to loose.

Not true. Every job I've applied to in the last two days has required my SSN. They will not look at the application until you enter it. We need legislation on this issue. A social security number is a form of identification, simple as that. And they are stolen and used to gain access to information, accounts.. ect. I'm not against giving my SSN to a company, but not before I get an interview. If I send out 10 resumes a day online, resumes being stored on company servers (Company's I might never even get to work for). That's 50 new places that now have my SSN in just one weeks time.

I get that (FDIC insured), but you're naming one scenario out of hundreds of possible things that can happen when you ID is stolen. It can cause you major problems. The world is scarey and getting scarier by the day. Just wait till they tell you the gov can't afford FDIC and that you have to buy your own insurance. It's all coming.

 

I never have given my SSN when applying online. I enter all zeros and then explain why during contact or interview with company.

 

You folks are over looking the obvious. Countless times seen Managers and numerous other personal with hiring ability leave out printed applications for a potential employee out in plain site. They don't care. Look around in the office with your eyes only. Other folks information is in plain site.
What's worse, These folks do NOT shred much, except company information ( if that ). Online is a good start to protect your information.Most of your information printed out, Still goes to a dumpster/ transfer site or landfill with zero shredding. a garbage man / mail carrier knows a lot also. ( assume no one can be trusted with your info )



PS. don't forget copy machines. you know the same ones copy your drivers license and SSN card holds memory. Then shipped off to a 3rd world country for recyling. Wish i could make this crap up lol
I never found a solution for this. Bring in your own copies?


ETA: with out a doubt. Question / Explain look like a paranoid skitzo. Reality: you are NOT a sheep going with the flow of how the 'system' works.
