Well Ive been attending a cdl trucking driving school for the past 4 weeks, along with 2 other students we went to the testing site today, thinking mostly about the parking tests ones we might have trouble in, the test lasted 15 minutes for the 3 of us......all 3 failed the brake test , could not believe it, that should have been a breeze. during our 160 hour course we have had a total of 4 different instructors, one week after doing maneuvers another instructor would change up techniques , but as of yesterday, day before testing one of the instructors informed us that instead of doing parking brake test, service brake test, low air pressure test, we were required to do trailer brake test, and also air test without depressing brake pedal, 3 psi in one minute, we conducted the test as he stated. by the time we got to the air loss test our gauges were showing 70 psi, failed us for not having enough pressure to conduct visual and buzzer, spring brake test. Inwhich I was still able to do the test, but I guess you have to have 120 psi's before starting test. Inwhich we were never instructed, for three guys to fail the same thing. I wonder about some of these schools, so many failures, every day we would have to share our old and broken down truck with students that had failed several times before and very limited teaching. Just letting out steam...sorry

If all three failed that it is a good indication the school isn't doing their job well. The sole purpose of a school is to help you get your CDL. Read over your CDL manual and absorb the brake test in there step by step. That's the correct method. Form a study group in the evening with them other two students and quiz each other. you can talk each other through the brake test just as well. You have three chances so don't get discouraged.

Thats crazy for them to fail you.

If you got the truck up to 125 psi before each test and perform each test correctly you should pass.

If the truck fails the test it's not your fault. It's defective equipment. An air leak.

When I did the test the dot guy didn't even care if the truck passed. It was a pos truck and he knew it. He just needed to see me jump thru the hoops.

EDIT: I see now, you mentioned you didn't get the psi up for each test.

lol i failed my cdl test the first time. Don't get discouraged. Just learn from the mistake.

I was though that you air up until governor release. Put truck in gear. (some stated require wheel chocks) Turn it off. Push in both knobs. At this point you should have at least 110 left unless there is a leek in which case our truck is failing. wait 60 sec see if it leeks with no braking. Grab johnson and test just trailer. Only pull half way so u dont use tons of air. 60 seconds. release. put brake peddle down an hold steady for 60 sec. if you fluctuate the peddle at all you will use up air. After all those you should still have 100+ psi if the truck isn't leaking. Then pump brakes until warning buzzers come on and they eventually pop out. Call off the psi at warning and at pop out. Then put truck in nutral and start up. Rev to 1000 rpm or so and insure it gets up to 120psi quick enough.
