So, driving tanker seems profitable, whats the catch?

Are tanker loads usually down and back in the same day? No sleeping overnight for your run?

 

Most of mine can be turned in a day, Parked in Kentucky now, seems I stay out maybe 2 nights a week with weekends home

It depends on the company. In MY particular situation, Yes! The longest run I have is 130 miles one way. However, We also do other chemicals that are to far to pickup and return. So, again in my particular situation, lets say I have to go to Wyoming to load a particular chemical. It's to far to go load and return in 14. So they put us up overnight and continue back after 10. Usually 3 hrs from that point to home terminal but that's only once in a while for me.

Again, depends on the company. There's MY situation and full OTR, and everything in between. Seek and ye shall find.

I always deadheaded back to the terminal after unloading and it paid the same. Was OTR which is what I prefer, but went home after every unload. East Coast to California, approx. 1 hr. unload, then deadhead back to East Coast for next load. Did that all over the West Coast, Western states, everywhere. I was lucky, not all companies do that. Some customers/chemical plants want exclusive use of the trailers and are willing to pay for that service.

I kinda feel your pain, brother: I've been there a couple times myself. Thankfully, my wife is supportive and understanding, so she hasn't tossed me out with the bathwater, yet.

 

I run what my company calls the reload system. I unload, (usually) go to the nearest terminal and reload out of there. Some guys like to get a load coming right back home, but I like to bounce around for awhile.

 

Most fuel stops (I only use the big 5) give you points for fueling and purchases in the C-store. Basically $.01 back to you for each gallon bought or dollar spent.
