Or some signage. I don't know how many places I encountered with no suggestion they occupied a building, been there 20 years.
-
Since that is one of the RC Moore terminals in the picture's background, perhaps the driver was busy admiring their fancy facility when he should have been looking for trains.
-
One article stated that the truck stalled out and rolled down the hill onto the tracks. After looking on Google maps I just dont see how that was possible. Plus if it did roll why didn't the driver get it stopped?
-
Look on Google street view. The hill is a 12% grade. Drivers frequently try to climb it in too high of a gear (despite the signs that say 102" trailers prohibited), then stall and / or panic.
-
True, it is a short but pretty good hill with a nice corner to boot. As others have said, I don't know why some GPS units send drivers that way... perhaps they need to update their maps for that area?
-
The article made it sound like he rolled out of the parking lot, should have clarified that. It was one of them days yeaterday :/ I looked at the Google maps street view, if that's a 12% grade then the tranny probably got confused and cut power to the motor. Still dont explain why the driver didn't tey to stop it and let it roll back onto the tracks. Good thing there wasn't anybody behind him.

Here's a link to a news article with a few more details about what happened. It sounds like the driver has blamed his GPS...
Train, Rig Collide At Luzerne County Crossing
Investigators said the drver of the tractor trailer was following a navigational system to find his way and stalled on the hill near the tracks.

Proof that you do actually need to look out the windshield every so often...
I've traveled that hill both ways with a 75 foot long rig. It's not difficult at all, but it takes most of both lanes to negotiate the curves. Why he 'stalled' on the tracks I don't know. Maybe he started up the hill without moving out of his lane to the left and saw that his trailer wouldn't clear the guard rail and stopped with traffic behind him. Even fully loaded, you can drop it in low gear and idle up the hill. -
Oh, great....NOW ya tell me!
