I am currently in the market for trucks and have set my eyes on a 2010 International ProStar (cummins ISX) with about 500K miles. Asking price is $49K with 1 year/100k mile warranty from the dealer.
I've been asking my trucking buddies for their opinions on this truck, and the results have been mixed. One says he swears by the ISX ProStar, and others say they've had bad experiences with them.
I'd like to know my fellow interweb truckers' opinions. We all know the internet is the best place for the most thoughtful and accurate information, because no one lies on the internet! Right? Right?!
Seriously, what do you guys think?
Is 500K too high mileage for the ProStar?
Any red flags I should be aware?
Any common issues with this truck?
Is the warranty worth it? Another dealer quoted me $47k without warranty.
Buying a used 2010 Pro Star ISX...

I'm a company driver and I drove that model, it wouldn't go 30,000 miles for an oil change without needing 2 extra oil filter changes, overall it was a good truck and if I owned it, I'd change the oil and filter at 15 to 17,000. I think I read here the timing might have been off. Not sure.
gibbsfree Thanks this. -
The glaring weak point of the ISX 400 is the egr cooler. They had a problem with the engine settling on the mounts causing the cooler to crack with the symptom coolant loss with no obvious leaks. More than likely its been replaced but verify if you can. The other problem was with various usually false emissions related warnings. Check the International threads here and especially what heavyd has to say. Most of these aggravations can be eliminated by replacing the crankcase filter under the finned cover left front block every 50k miles regardless the recommended interval.
I had a 2010 and now a 2011 and they are great trucks. Really good mpg and enough torque to out climb 95% of the trucks on the road pound for pound. Have Diesel Doctor tune the ecm and you will be impressed.gibbsfree Thanks this. -
You hit the money on this one. From what I've been reading, number 1 thing to check for this truck (especially around 500K miles) is to see if the EGR cooler has been replaced.
Other things that i've been reading.
Bonuses
-replaced turbo
-new exhaust filter - exhaust filter change can cost around 2500
-new tires
Negatives
-if front spring leaf has been replaced, truck might've been hit in the front
-recap tires- newer are better, but not all used trucks have new tires
-when driving, check if truck pulls left or right. Can cost around 1500 -
If you can check the previous owner. If it was a mega the dpf probably wasn't cleaned every 150k if at all. Turbo problems aren't common but happen with any engine. Keep the oil changes on time/miles.
Ask the seller if they will pay for a 3 axle alignment and get it done every 50k. $200 a few times a year is way cheaper than steers a few times a year. You do know recaps on the steers is a mortal sin, right?
Take it to a dealer to have the ecm checked for updates. International does ongoing updates to improve performance and driveability. Its the same as your PC. The operating system on both get updates to address bug fixes, etc.
If it doesn't have a new serpentine belt insist that the seller replace it. 500k on any fan belt is a reservation for your spot on the shoulder waiting for road service.

Check the front cab bushings

I hate that upside down triangle...
-
All it means is "look down here" at the digital display that is usually hidden by the steering wheel. However, I hate what that usually leads to.

And the sleeper shocks/airbags. Your kidneys will appreciate it after you drive through Jackson, MS.

And Oklahoma City.
