I guess my ol CAT is ancient but on one side of the stick it says engine running normal temp. On the other side it says engine stopped oil cold. I agree though checking oil ain't rocket science, the only dumb question is the one not asked.
-
The main reason you would want to check your oil later in the day, is to spot a possible contamination problem (failed injector oring)that came about after your pretrip. You can minimize the damage caused by fuel or coolant dilution if it's caught early enough.
-
Then you have never done an accurate oil level check. Running the engine for five minutes does nothing but get oil in all the cracks and crevices of the engine and it is not warm enough to run back down to the oil pan for a long time. You should be checking it before starting the engine, that is when it has had time to run down to the oil pan.

Where does the dipstick located? in the oil pan right? so it makes sense to me to have the oil pan with as much oil in it to get a accurate reading. cold reading is best for this. i.m.o.

Shut the truck off, wait MINIMUM of one minute and check it. It is best to check it after the truck has sat for awhile, IE over night. This way, you pull the dip stick out and look at it, NO NEED to wipe it. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, lets not over complicate things.

I can't believe a thread about checking your oil level, has made it to FOUR pages.
Talk about over analyzing life....
