So what happened? You figure it out. I did only too late.

Thanks for coming to my defense. And thanks for attacking me also. It gives me a chance to further explain.

I reported the damage to the side of the trailer before leaving the shipper. I also reported the fact that I thought the damage was only cosmetic. I totally over looked the damage to the tandems. I should have picked up on the trailer tracking to the right but it was floating freely so it was not always in my mirror.

The company has two trailers. Mine, a dry van and a reefer van pull by someone else. I was not leaving another driver to take the fall for my error. It was my intention to pay for the damage myself. I only became aware of the damage to the tandems after seeing the sign break in my mirrors and having three policemen plus the street crew witness the signs demise. The cops were following me on the way to lunch. Also a fellow off duty trucker saw the whole thing. The trucker suggested the tandems were broken and with his help we found the damage there. I still got a ticket.

I lost my job because this is a two truck operation and the owner of the company is very protective of his CSA score. I am 50 percent of that score so when mine takes a hit it is a big deal. I am not sure what CSA stands for but I think the first two letters are Chicken XXXX.

I am an Air Force Academy graduate. Honor is very important to me. One of the things they taught us was that the answer to a why question is "no excuse sir." Nothing about this post was me trying to excuse myself. Nothing. I was trying to share my mistake of failure to spot all the damage the first time which lead to further damage down the road.

I have lots of experience inspecting rail cars. Many days inspecting 1000 cars a day but inspecting 1 trailer a day even after 9 years does not make you an expert. I missed something because I allowed the eye level damage to distract me from finding the underlying cause. This distraction caused me to loose focus. While I was driving and racking my brain to try to figure out how I damage the trailer, I hit a crosswalk sign, thus multiplying my mistake.

So, now I am an owner operator almost. I start the authority process Monday. Today, I bought a trailer and a Tractor. I had planned on working with the same company but that is not possible now.

Again thanks for all the comments. Positive and Negative alike.

Wooly, let me begin with commending you for your candid accounting of your incident involving a crosswalk sign in hopes someone else will benefit from the mistake. What follows is my take on the situation, for what it's worth.

When I drove for Schneider their policy was that they wouldn't fire a driver for being involved in an accident, but they would fire a driver for not reporting an accident. Apparently your employer is less lenient. You mentioned having nine years driving experience. I assume those years were accident free. In my book that would demonstrate a safety minded driver. Your incident didn't involve a disregard for safety, nor was it caused by your negligence while operating a Big truck. More of a fluke that wouldn't happen like that again in a hundred years, especially to you now that you've experienced it and will be extra cautious to prevent a re-play.

Your employer knew/knows what he had with you. Will your replacement be as reliable as you? What are the odds that you'd be involved in another incident? IMO, your employer made a mistake in letting you go in the interest of safety. Seems more like a knee-jerk reaction.

Enter fate, if you believe in that. Perhaps the incident was intended to give you a push toward becoming an O/O. If not for the incident what was your time frame to leave the nest and fly on your own? Were you procrastinating?

Has Big truck truckin' come down to paranoia over a CSA score that causes an otherwise careful and safety minded driver to be terminated for one, rather minor, incident? If so, it's counter productive. If a pristine driving record is so desirable, employers will have to hire newBees just starting out as the experienced drivers are eliminated due to a fluke incident. I seriously doubt a newBee would have caught the problem that caused your incident. With nine years experience you're pushin' a million miles. Even if it's half that, --- that's a lot of incident free miles that should count for something, --- character, if nothing else.

You impress me as a stand-up guy, Wooly. I've enjoyed your posts here at TTR and sincerely hope that you'll continue participating in the future. Your absence would create a void very hard to fill. I also understand that the venture that you're about to embark upon will require your full attention, leaving less time to mingle with us here. I wish for you the very best of success, now and in the future. You can do this. And I think you will.
    Please keep us informed.

That really stinks, we have a truck open it is an older Volvo. Only problem is it is leased to a Canadian company. We can look at a re-lease to the US if you are looking for work.

Thanks for clearing all that up, Wooly.

The way you explained it the first time left something to be desired.
    Apologies for my harshness.
