12 Months, Now What???

    I've just about completed my first 12 months of accident/incident/ticketless driving OTR and now I'm trying to figure out where this career will lead me to. Some old hand came in on the CB the other night while I was on a WV highway and we got to talking and he told me I needed to find a niche. I don't know if he was real or not, maybe a ghost trucker.... but what he said was right and I am looking for my niche. I've been looking into oilfield and livestock hauling and made some calls, they said they both said they would take me on with 12 months experience. I'm leaning more towards livestock right now because I think I would enjoy transporting cattle to the slaughterhouse. I would also be interested in some kind of farm work or mining of some sort, basically I'm looking to relocate somewhere and settle in with a job that gets me home more frequently. The states I am considering are Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. Can anybody give me any more guidance as to which companies to look into and where? I've been driving dry van with a straight 10.

    Lol,... my belongings are located in SC right now but I pretty much live in my truck most of the time. My wife and I want to relocate to the Midwest wherever I can find a job. I don't know if you're serious or not but I will look into the caskets. I once thought about making caskets on my own from scratch but never got around to honing my fine wood working skills.

    Pick a state with no personal income taxes; there are 7 of them. On your list WY and SD are 2 of them.

    I don't know anything about hauling cattle, but do know National Carriers has a division that does that with terminals in Liberal, KS and Tyler, TX.

    There's lots of niche trucking with tanker companies doing specialty hauling and a lot of that is local/regional. Hauling waste water from chemical plants or meat processing plants and dozens of other areas too numerous to list. One driver posted he found a job hauling animal manure in tankers to disposal sites.

    Look at some towns and cities in areas you would like to live in, then go to city-data website to check the demographics of that town/city. Then check Redfin website for a place to live there. Check the trucking jobs websites to see which companies are hiring from that city/town. Some local companies you probably never heard of will have jobs listings for the areas you're interested in.

    Good money to be made in the oil fields. Check out ACME trucking. My brother is an O/O and relocated to OKC and got on with them and is making very good money. They set up O/O's with two checks per week, one is a payroll check and the other is an owner's check. That way you are set up with all your taxes paid AND it is set up for buying more trucks and hiring drivers.

    You would be hiring on with an O/O fleet owner under the ACME umbrella, dispatched by ACME, and getting a paycheck. You would be paid a percentage of the load. My brother hauls flatbed, mostly delivering pipe, but sometimes loads that require HazMat.

    Save enough to get your own used truck and the money becomes very very respectable.
