Hi everyone, My husband and I recently acquired a new 2013 3500 Ram crew cummins cab and chassis and installed a CM flatbed. Originally he was planning on driving it to do some hotshotting either leased or on our own but wanted to wait a little longer as we saved up some money before he quit his job. He was offered a decent local driving job where he's making about $23/hr plus about 15-20 hours of overtime a week. So he's pulling in a decent $1400-$1500 a week. He's pretty happy with this gig so now he's not so sure if he wants to go full time hotshotting now. So if he doesn't our options would be me driving the truck ( I don't have a CDL) or hiring someone to drive the truck for us. We have our own authority and I'm not even sure if companies will lease on to operators with someone else's truck.
Has anyone tried hiring someone to run their truck for them? Alternatively, is it possible for my husband to make more than he's making now in hotshotting? A steady paycheck is pretty nice so it would be hard to convince him now to go out on his own.
Thanks!

Its only my advice because obviously, I dont know your specific situation. If you have a line on a good contract with a good company for that hotshot to work... I'd say ok to either, you or another driver in it, but again, every situation is different & I dont know what yours is. Otherwise, my advise is to forget about that hot shot & tell him to stay where he is if he is happy. To consistently make that kinda money "in your pocket" with that hotshot is not likely... but again, if you have a good handshake on a good contract with a shipper etc, then depending on your situation, you or another driver could run the hotshot.
I know it didnt answer your question like you wanted but there is no way I can tell you what to do without knowing a lot more of your situation. -
Keep the steady paycheck.thats good money with no headache.
Worry about the hot shot later. -
Thanks again! -

I wouldn't hire a driver unless he has verifiable experience. Also, it's likely your commercial insurance since it's your truck, so think about your risk, deductible, hassles, time etc. I speak from experience. I started getting overwhelmed with work so I hired a driver and put him in my 2nd truck. First run, he wrecks a $50k boat driving in an ice storm I had told him to stop short of a good 300 miles before he got in it. I didn't get anything from him up front so he took off and I'm on the hook for a $1,000 deductible, got an angry rich guy making threats of law suits, tons of paper work and having to finish the delivery once it's repaired.. I'm sure I could sue him, but he probably don't have much so I'd just be out more money for a lawyer.

Don't hire a driver. It doesn't matter who he is or what his experience, he will destroy your equipment and ruin you life. If you want to drive yourself, make sure you can do it full time, because with insurance and other costs, you will not make money part time. Don't forget that this is a hard job and if you have other options, take them.
I say this as someone who had drivers destroy trucks and cause tremendous damage and one who has had O/O who came from the 9-5 world quit because they could not hack the hours.

plate the truck for 26,000# get yourself a 3 car wedge and move cars in your area (300 mile radius) it won't pay the best but it will keep you out of the pool halls.
