IIRC someone told me the 6.4 was a Ford motor due to International not wanting to give Ford the complete specs on the engine. They said Ford dumped them because of it.
Someone also said there is an internal wiring harness inside the back of the motor that can go bad. The cab has to be removed to get to it. Hope mine is in good shape!

I actually never see the 6.4 or 6.0 around anymore. Mostly 7.3 and the new 6.7. Lots and lots of 6.0 for sale around here. I wasn't as much saying the 6.0 is better than the 6.4 motor wise, I'm saying mpg and maintenance. The 6.4 got worse mpg and is very expensive to fix.
-
In the last decade I wanted the same thing, a ford with a cummins motor but since 2011 the ford 6.7 is unbeatable IMHO. Cummins are going through the same growing pains ford have left behind them.
-
I can't remember what the whole story with that was. I do remember though that both motors were based on similar motors used in Europe and what caused most of the problems was switching the emissions standards from European to American. Which the European standards are more strict than ours anyway.Foxcover Thanks this.

I think they are all expensive to fix! Lol. The 6.4 is heavier on fuel if the DPF isn't kept clean, but otherwise better on fuel than the 6.0 or 7.3. That's been my experience anyway. Other than the DPF filter it's just been oil changes, brakes and steering bushings/bar, I "thankfully" haven't had to fix anything else.

Are you referring to the DEF problems? I'm still learning about cummins.

You nailed it Nedrudt!
Ford have been building their own emmissions compliant engines in Europe long before the US market demanded it based on their carbon credits, cummins "being more fuel efficient at the time" didn't need to do this as soon as Ford as they had more carbon credits built up which bought them an extra couple of years. Ford contracted Navistar for x amount of years to build their engines which turned into a nightmare but bought Ford the time to develop and pass their engine design into the states.
That way Ford weren't the ones carrying the carbon credit deficit and Navistar would sink or swim which they did both.Nedrudt Thanks this. -
I really don't think my 6.4 would get any worse over 26K than it does at 26K.
-
Yes sir. The most challenging thing all engine manufacturers have done to date is create an engine with an emmissions after treatment system while not imploding the engine due to the internal pressure of the exhaust not being able to get out efficiently 'hence blown turbos, head and head stud issues, injectors etc" and at the same time trying to being fuel efficient while all this is going on.
Cummins have been snoozing on this despite the extra time they had to develop this due to their carbon credits. Ford now have an emmissions compliant, and more fuel efficient engine than cummins ever had which is quite a milestone considering the 06-08 cummins engines were so good.
The only downside is there are a lot more components to give trouble in the future on all manufacturers engines which will truly separate the men from the boys.Nedrudt Thanks this. -
It's very possible you'll get better. A 26k toy hauler is very long and tall. You can run a 32k flatbed with shorter loads and not feel a thing. Very dependent or your right foot and wind resistance.GearWarrant Thanks this.
