Noticed some discussion on short haul rates lately. I agree that it can't be assessed the same way long haul can (250+ miles) but what is a solid way to figure it. I was thinking about $100 stop pay after first stop (load) plus normal mileage rate. How do YOU figure it?

Minimum $ amount to get it loaded, more if crosses into the 5 boroughs, more if it crosses the GW.
up to 100 loaded miles-$530,$65 a stop after 1on 1off, $65 for straight tarp job, $100 for borough pay, $150 for GW crossing (generally I go around it but it's still on the charge list). That's how I generally do short haul. If it's a broker I look for more~$600 minimum plus extras. I shoot for two loads a day that fit that criteria: one headed away from home, one bringing me back home for supper.
Lots of ways to figure it: at the end of the day as long as you made $ that you need over any and all costs you have done alright.blairandgretchen, Cetane+ and Steeleandsonfarms Thank this. -
Anything under 500 miles gets figured on an hourly or day rate depending on the time I think will be involved.

I stay primarily within a 500 mile radius of the house. There is a lot of stuff that needs moved in my area, primarily agriculture related products from mills to plants. The shorter hauls pay me better, and almost all my customers, I can take a break there if I need to. And when they order something, they want it, so they do not have me sitting and waiting for loading or unloading except in rare cases. In which case, after the first two hours, I get $37.50 an hour. I generally do a load a day.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Mike I pulled one yesterday that paid $800 for 93 miles. I look for at least $3.00 a mile for less than 200 miles.
