Barring the facts and circumstances that others have mentioned, how about docking the pay? i.e. .01/mi until they've made 3 appts on time.

What is the problem here? Is this not a place where like-minded business people get together to discuss business and how to make themselves better? Stayinback...your "We're about tired of it" comment makes it seem as if one is attacking you personally. Last time I checked, your not on my payroll. We are not talking about the shippers or receivers here. We are specifically talking about a small percentage of MY Drivers, not anybody else's! And I'm looking for ways to resolve an issue without firing an employee. For those that are taking it so personal when it's not even about them, are you having problems getting to your appointments on-time???

Okay Wonder, The point to point was Monroe Township, NJ to Monrovia, MD. It was the fourth of four stops. Two Sunday, two Monday morning. Driver opted to take non-toll road which is why he was late. Driver has a company card and can pull cash for tolls whenever he'd like. I am finding out that had we taken the toll road (which I would pay for) we would have fared a much better chance of getting there on time.

If you are trying to achieve an on-time percentage of 98%, you might try basing a driver incentive on that same number. If after xx of deliveries, they have an on-time percentage of 98% or higher they receive the bonus. The flip side of that is since you are monitoring the on-time percentage by driver you know which ones have the lowest percentage and therefore a better idea of where to start cutting if need be.

Their isn't a lot of problems here other than....... You won't tell us what city the driver was in.....
So let me give you a real world example on my side of the country..... Seattle to Everett,Wa at 7 am= 60-90 minutes on average travel time for 30 miles.... Woodburn,Or to Vancouver,Wa 30 miles@7 a.m = 45-75 minutes..... -
The biggest problem here is the last appointment is with a Costco who may not reschedule our appointment until Wednesday. If there were any other reasonable explanation (weather, traffic, breakdown) this wouldn't upset me so much. But this was a matter of poor-planning. Driver stated that he had not been to Monrovia, MD before and wasn't sure what to expect. However, we have had this load on our backs since Wednesday. More than enough time for him to research and do his due diligence. I find that no one likes to be micro-managed, most drivers want to be left alone to do there jobs and I respect that. But when a mistake like this costs him and me lots of money that's a hard pill to swallow!

Seems like a fair question to me, so not sure on the reasoning behind all the BS replies myself.
I would do one of two things if I were in your shoes.
Offer an incentive for on time deliveries.
Deduct a "fee" for late deliveries. Maybe $50 for this side of it.
Keep in mind traffic, weather, and so on, and there should be no reason for a chargeable late delivery. Also, make sure the drivers KNOW that they WILL be reimbursed for any and all toll roads along the route if running a lot of East coast. But be prepared for some horrendous toll receipts!
Sounds to me anyways, that you are making an effort to keep the guys in question, so bravo for that.
Remember though, that the vast majority of folks in this forum are either owner operators, or more and more, owner operator wanabee's. Either way, your main audience here are drivers, not shippers etc.
I pull OD loads, and the only appointments I have a crane appointments as a rule, so not really affected by this myself.

I have to and like to run legal, if a shipper holds me up on a tight load, I'll tell dispatch that I'll be late, or most likely will be late on the load. Your drivers should too. Why not just fire them if they make you look bad??
