Because they are convinced they already know everything about driving, otherwise the state wouldn't have granted them their 4-wheeler license.
Advanced education and training are widely considered by students to be mere formalities that must be suffered to obtain a CDL, then it can all be thrown out the window.
I don't know how many times I was told "I'm only here because I need to learn to shift, log and back"...
put down the smart phone

My trainer wouldn't allow my phone beyond the curtain into the cab. My shoes couldn't go into the sleeper.
I respected that. No problem at all.
I'm not much of a txtr and don't prefer to surf the net on my phone so it was easy to follow the rule.
To the OP, just say to the student that his/her phone is not allowed beyond that curtain into the cab. Makes it simple.pattyj Thanks this. -
There ya go.Trainers need to set rules before leaving the terminal. If the student don't like it, not a problem im not going to be your trainer then.

I kept this post short and sweet to keep from boring you all ... and you all jump to conclusions that I don't know how to train... or that I don't have a set of rules... that maybe I don't have a conversation with a student before they put anything in the truck ... well you are all wrong ...... when I started training I had two pages of rules that I would go over with my students ... and it kept getting shorter and shorter as time passed ... down to one rule ... you need to listen to me ... that's it ! Once you stop listening to me I am done...
I have fired more students lately then I have finished training ... -
I love and embrace technology, but my phone works for me - not the other way around. The more successful you are, the less you should be a slave to your phone. It was a sad day for the presidency when Mr. Obama started carrying a phone clipped to his hip. (I would feel the same about this regardless of who was in office)
I think it is the addiction to twitter and facebook that is the real problem. Those folks should walk around naked, since they have no desire for any privacy in their lives.lvnvchuck Thanks this. -
I agree tell them the rules before they get in the truck. Maybe they can only use there phone on there break. In the end they will be glad cause there is a lot to learn. The school teaches nothing really.

We jumped to conclusions because you failed to mention all of this on your first post.
lvnvchuck, Tonythetruckerdude and gpsman Thank this. -
But what if he's like the girl where I used to work that had over 700 friends on Face plant ?

I trained OTR for about 30 working days and phone was turned off while training. I called my family once a day after we shut down. No texting no tweeting no social networking. I wanted to absorb as much as i could from my trainer because I knew I would need it when they cut me loose on my own!!! Thats probably why I seem to have adapted well to trucking and have had no issues w/my company.
Tonythetruckerdude and pattyj Thank this. -
I don't call them "smartphones" I call them by their real name, Slave Bracelet.
