Personal freedoms, I can't have all the senses doing what they do, Not advocating banning of ear buds/plugs. Sure I drive fast in the POV with radio knob turned loud to hear over exhaust rowing through gears. On the fence, Can't hear sirens banging gears anyway. ear buds no thanks, just my opinion.

I see drivers all the time with ear buds in driving and dancing in the seat whjle they roll along...

When I first started driving I would always look and wave or nod to a driver that was passing me or that I was passing.. but now I just keep my eyes forward and dont look cause it is just too scary to see what the otherr drivers are doing while rolling down the highway.. so, now, just look forward ..

Funny, I just finished my first shift driving with these noise canceling ear buds:

    http://www.buydig.com/mobile/produc...&cagpspn=pla&catargetid=1875425939&cadevice=m

I got them for Christmas, but didnt use them because it is illegal (at least in California). But someone strongly recommended that I try them just once, especially since I listen to a lot of audio books.

They are amazing and I'll be using them much more often. I actually found myself thinking "#### that turn signal got awfully noisy" since I could barely hear it at 65mph before. It cuts way way down on all the wind noise and droning -- the continuous white noise that makes it hard to hear anything else. But it makes it much easier to hear irregular noises.

I was skeptical, but I strongly recommend trying it. I'll take the ticket if I ever get one -- as far as I'm concerned I'm safer with them in!

    Just an update.

Used the decible app in my 06 frightshaker day cab.

112 to 115 decibels on the freeway at 60mph.

Sooooo....... last time I checked you can buy your way out of a ticket, but you cant buy away hearing loss........

Use common sense people. And anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

***Edit*** This is a old columbia that is stripped down to be as light as possible. The newer cascadias we have are better insulated, but weigh more.

People who say that ear plug hamper your hearing don't understand ear plugs. There are differents plugs that provide different levels of protections. I had an audiologist tell me I should wear them while driving.

Get the ones appropriate for your situation. Ear plugs don't eliminate ALL noises, just the bad stuff.
