It's not rocket science, but you do have to know what you're doing. If ordering heavy, you have to know your truck and trailer like the back of your hand. Empty axle weights, spacings, tire ratings...etc. if you know it well, you can tell when the load is heavier than advertised as soon as they put it on the trailer. Also general knowledge of the state OSOW regs helps. They all differ per state.

We hear driver inquiries all the time. We also hear and see the horror stories of the guys who didn't do their homework BEFORE booking the load. Pilot cars, police escorts, or sitting on a load for a month because some technicality with some county/state/province. Start small and work your way up. I had worked for a smaller company back in the 90s that stuck me under an 8 axle for the simple reason that I had a class A CDL. That's a hard learning curve. Local, it's a cakewalk. OTR, it's a whole different level.

I always recommend new drivers to start with flatbedding, hauling coils, and practicing getting their drive axles and trailer axles even on weight. Even if the law gives you 34 on drives and 40k with a 10'2 spread, get the drives and spread weights even.
