Coming back on 294 around Chicago Wed. night I took time to notice how all those trucks were driving. Not one wandering into other lanes, most at speed limit. The only thing I saw was the flatbedder trailing s loose strap all the way down the right side, dragging it on the ground. One of the few speeding, too, about 75 mph on 94 about exit 30. Hope he/she got there OK.

BTW, Hindale Oasis in Chicago was full at 8:30 pm, with trucks parked along the on ramp as far along the highway as they could

In 2013 760,000 drivers moved 140 billion worth of goods. There are about 3 million registered trucks logging 93 billion miles a year. That's about 195,000 trips to the moon.
Every second of every day 4,000 worth of goods moves about 2,000 miles.
I will do more miles in my truck this year than most people do in their cars in 10 years. And by the time next year is here I will have driven over 500,000 miles. I am a third generation driver. My grandfather had 4.9 million career miles, my father is at 3.5.
    Just a bit of perspective.

Truck traffic was always there the many years I've been driving a car but in my mind I lumped them together, never paid attention except as an obstacle to driving. Now I have a heightened awareness of trucks and truckers individually.

That's a good thing. Go on a day trip with your son sometime when he gets a little experience. Every new person that has rode with me always says "I didn't know it was like this". One ride is all it takes for an eye opener and new found respect. I wish everyone had to ride in a truck one time but that's only dreaming. :)

    broodmom Thanks this.

Looking back to the days when I began running 48 states in the mid 80's, and comparing that experience to today's experience (in terms of volume, road and truck stop congestion) there is no comparison. There were far fewer truck stops then, yet far MORE places to park (not considering areas such as Jersey and the Northeast in general where limited parking has always been an issue)

The last 25 years, truck (and automobile) volume has increased exponentially. Think about the increase in fuel tax revenues ... then they still complain there is not enough. (MPG increases have no where near kept pace with miles driven volume)
