You say its not unusual to terminate someone
when they have to take time off for a medical
problem like a major surgery? Can you name
any of these companies? Dont you think he
may need additional medical services after
his surgery. He lost his health insurance
because of his being terminated. What is
the logic behind terminating him? He did
turn in the truck so they can keep running
it. Its totally understandable that he take a
physical before he returns to duty. Letting
the driver go like they did shows exactly
what the company really thinks of its
drivers.

Unless there is something in the policy handbook about this,I would be filing for unemployment and sueing them.No doubt about it.

The op is not the first heartland driver that I have heard this kind of thing from.
before I left gordon after heartland bought us out I spoke with several gti drivers who were former heartland drivers and had even worse horror stories.
they did not come by the nickname "Heartless" by accident... as the saying goes " where there is smoke there is fire."
this practice of terminating drivers over surgery or any other family emergency is horrible.
I have been off for 2 weeks now recovering from surgery myself and the company I now drive for didnt even make me clean out my truck. Just told me it would be waiting for me when I get back and nobody will bother it.
while at gti my wife and I drove team there most of the time...she got sick and could not work for 6 months. The never terminated her and even paid her disability while she was off. I guarantee you that heartland would not have done that.Air Breeze Thanks this. -
Get it there yourself ......Heartland !!!!!!

Hope that you are doing better , but in the long run you are probably better off getting away from heartland!!

No 883, it wasnt a scheduled surgery I GOT SICK ON ROAD and like ive said I CAN understand not letting truck set but sir they EXPECTED ME TO DO IT THE MORNING AFTER SURGERY, NO WAY I COULD DO IT. Thanks for speedy recovery part though . I was totally shocked by way they did me and just want newer guys & gals to know it can happen so try to plan ahead , ONLY THING THAT SAVED ME FROM LOSING EVERTHING WAS MY TAX REFUND OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN SCREWED
