Curious to know folks opinion on the Volvo 880 compared to the Pete 379 and KW 900. When taken care of, I understand the Pete and KW can go for several million miles. But what about that 880 D16? How does fuel mileage compare? What about the newer Pete 389 and the newer 900s? Do these 880s (say 2006 model) fall apart and rattle like a freightshaker or are they still pretty solid?
It is my understanding in most of western Canada, the KWs are #1 in sales way above other makes.

I think maybe I should have posted this in the "Trucks" forum. My bad.
-
Beware of the D16, I have heard bad things about that engine. The D16 can be troublesome.
-
Volvo quit making the 880 I believe due to lack of sales ...
Also the older D16's had lots of negative feedback about them ... -
Yeah, I have been reading all that negative stuff. They are still making the D16, I wonder if they have improved it at all.
-
Yes they still make this engine however, parts are much more expensive than D12 and D13 counterparts. I think they have improved the engine/components but parts are still expensive. It is labeled as a "heavier" duty than the 12 and 13 but I don't know if the higher prices warrant the purchase of one. Do some more research which I am sure is already in the Truck Forum....
Good Luck -
I would not compare volvos with Petes or Kenworths period.
-
And I knew I would get an answer like this. However, I keep reading posts about folks who drive Volvos and the majority seem to like them better than anything else they have driven.
I own a Harley, but I don't drink the koolaide. Will most likely sell the thing, wears me out after a day of riding and it is a full dresser.
I haven't ruled out Pete's and KWs, just looking at all angles. I have time, so why not? I think it is also good to look at what the megas are doing. They don't buy the trucks they do for the heck of it. They put a lot of research into what gets the most bang for the buck. I understand though, it is not always to maximize the profit when you own your own. That is a high priority on my list of reasons though. -
I think the megas do for the fuel economy. I'm not sure. I know I've heard a lot of bad tho. Costly repairs, in the shop all time, and a lot of repeat issues. Personally I have no experience to offer with them only second hand but I'm old school when it comes to this and I wouldn't by anything but a harley either so.
Worked as company driver for the same local company for 7 years. They kept buying freightliners from the local truck country. Why I don't know. A multitude of problems from all of them but they are cheap. My boss there struck me as a wise business man but I could never figure this part of him out either.
I'll admit I was mostly being sarcastic but I will also say I would never buy one. But hey, that's me. I just never heard anyone comparing them to the 379s which I DO own.
That said I didn't buy my 379 for the fuel mileage. We all know that. Tho I am doing a respectable 6.2-6.4 with it. I did buy it for the ride, reliability, durability, resale, workmanship, and yes, a little cuz well I just always wanted one.Last edited: May 4, 2014
GearWarrant Thanks this. -
I have a 379. I bought it new in 2003. I now have 1.1 million miles on it. Cat replaced the cylinder head at 448,000 miles. Has it been trouble free since then ? NO. I replaced the oxygen sensor at about 900k or so. I don't remember exactly . I got the code from the engine computer. I changed it myself. $193 in Arkansas. I wish I could buy the same truck again, new. But now we have the bs engines.
GearWarrant Thanks this.
