why do drivers stand for governed trucks?

That is not average. You can go onto the FMCSA site and look at any company. The majority, even large carriers have very few if any fatality accidents. I would love to know where you work and why they aren't putting a better safety plan in place.

A slow truck does not make a bad company. Crete, Walmart, the old GTI, and quite a few other carriers have pretty good reputations and have slow trucks. Being able to burn up the highway at 75+ means nothing if there's not a decent paycheck involved. I could care less how fast my truck went asking as I was paid in full on time

Well, to be fair, there are stretches of highway better suited to that sort of thing than others. Interstates 95 and 85 below Petersburg in VA come to mind.

If you're going to do that you need to take the extra steps to minimize the risk, like minding the speed ratings on your tires. Blown steers are scary at any speed.

"Back in the day" for me was '77. This is my second foray in trucking. Yes, convoys were the norm.

Makes perfect sense to me. You work a clock job, the longer you work, the more you make. Why shouldn't it be the same in trucking?

Because you know as well as I do that all of the sudden it will take a driver 35 hours of his 70 to go 800 miles. And then he will demand $20/hr. To do it.

Then leave the truck alone and let him do his job-not hard to figure?

From what I have seen a lot of companies do it to save on fuel costs. Our company trucks will run 70 MPH/ and 68 MPH on cruise. When running on cruise I have noticed a .5 MPG increase. On 100K miles a year that's a chunk of change.

How much money a year do these mega carriers spend a year on hiring drivers? Bet that's a chunk of change too?
