When speaking of "Heavy Haul" are you referring to oversize/wide loads or multi-axle loads? There is a big difference! As a rookie, I would suggest starting out with a flatbed and/or step deck company that hauls OD freight. Not many companies out there that will put a rookie in multi-axle heavy haul, Marley's, Schnabels, goldhoffer etc.... Start with some HVAC units, pipe, steel, small equipment..etc.. Gain knowledge in the basics of OD freight by hauling these types of loads. Things like loading a load to balance out your axle weights pretty evenly, reading and understanding permits, curfews, provisions, escort requirements, pole cars and the list goes on. Once you gain several years under those loads, you can then start to look into RGN's and move your way up to multi-axle and beyond if you so desire. When you reach the RGN level, you will need to learn about shimming, flip axles, outriggers and balancing your load weight between axles more closely. After a few more years at pulling that kind of freight, you may be ready for the next level.....multi-axle or LCV's.
In my opinion, there are quite a few "heavy haul" companies out there that move drivers up too quickly. That being said, I know there are some drivers out there that claim to know more than they really do and it shows up when they move up to quickly. Heavy Haul is a different breed of drivers all together. It's not something to take lightly because of the responsibility that goes along with the job. I've seen too many so called "Heavy Haul" drivers struggle to put their trailer together and struggle even more to get the load balanced among all the axles. As a matter of fact, I was loading one day recently and watched a driver trying to put his beam together. I have pretty much the same set up as he did so he was watching me like a hawk. I finally went over and asked him (after I was done putting my trailer together) if he needed a hand. He said "NO" so I went about my business, loaded, flagged it and waited on my escort. I sat there for over an hour, watching him trying to reconnect the neck with a 2 axle jeep. Granted, this isn't the easiest of tasks but he clearly had never done it before. I later found out, he jumped from a 3 axle RGN to a baby beam 2+2+2, just because he had just gotten his doubles/triples endorsement and the company did not have anyone else to pull that trailer at that time....NICE!!!
Anyway, if you like to run a lot of miles per week, love to keep moving, love to cheat on your log book....well, OD and/or Heavy haul will not be your cup of tea.
Hopes this helps and it's just my 2 cents worth.....

I just read an article not that long ago that TMC was hiring RGN drivers from outside the company because they are short of qualified drivers. -
