Canada 'decoupling' from the US economy

Cybergal, I would have to say that it depends entirely on where you live in the country & how closely your economy is tied to that of the US. Here in Alberta, we have a BOOMING economy, we are desperate for people, everywhere you go there are "Help Wanted" signs, but we are not dependendent on the US solely for our economic stability. In places like Ontario & Quebec & the Maritimes, I understand they are feeling the same slow down as the US because they are more closely tied to you than we in the West are.

 

We're booming here. 4 pages of help wanted ads in the paper. That's why I don't understand why so many people are out of work here. If they really wanted a J O B, they could have one.

 

Yep- all of the auto plants are going up down in AL, MS, TN... The wage rate down there allows the manufacturers to be competitive down there, and it is booming! I was in training about a year ago, and heard (don't know if it is true or not) but on Canada's west coast due to the pipeline coming through, welders and other pipeline support related jobs make insane amounts of money, and even McDonalds is paying $10+ an hour and still can't find enough people to work. One guy from Red Deer said that he McD's he knows isn't open late becasue they can't get people to work...

Meanwhile in Michigan...

 

The janitor makes $17.00 an hour at Nissan. Which is insane IMO. Average family of 4 can survive easily on that here. Even less if they manage their money right.

Housing cost in my area shot up a bit. Typical 1500 sq ft New Build, 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bath went for about $42K about 5 years ago. It goes for $55K now....or did

We do have some exclusive neighborhoods. Housing must start a XX amount of dollars before you are allowed to build. Craziest thing...they were thinking in yesterdays dollars LMAO. And the riff raff was able to move there too. Thanks to the subprime market, the junkers have moved up town

 

IMHO, Canada would be VERY smart to "decouple" from the US dollar and economy. America is in trouble.

 

That is not true if you listen to the government and some of the posters on this forum.

This is true. Thankfully, we have technology on our side and some of us actually know how to use it to our own advantage/education.

I spend several hours a week researching some minuscule report/comment made in the news. I've noticed that the very definition of "fair and balanced" has been changed to insinuate that the very mention of a story is considered a complete report.

When a topic is brought up by a "so-called" concerned citizen, reporters point out facts that were reported on/in 100's of stations and papers. When in fact, these "facts" were mentioned in passing around 3 in the morning, on page 4 near the center crease, or relegated to the midday self-help discussion.

I use 15-20 reliable global news sources to check a story, then dig some more. Actually, I use the entire net. But, one has to be careful when clicking on one of the conspiracy believers page. Although some of them actually provide a better spin on a story

An example: The economy. Here for me, it's not bad. I don't see any real issues here in the US except for the people who have over extended/spent themselves. But there is more to come as our economy continues down this same path.

However, on a global level the economy is affecting others on a very serious level. We're already seeing food riots in a couple of countries. There are signs of an increasing shortage on the horizon. Looting is rampant in third world countries, always has been. Inflation is starting to rise in the most affluent countries.

And fuel supplies, are just the tip of the spear.

 

Getting a job here is #### near impossible. It's like perona attacking a human in the amazon and eatting him alive when it come's to a job opening here. I've thought about moving if I can't get into trucking because I really need another job. I just can't make it on $100 a week. A lot of people are just to lazy to bother to get out and grab up those job's that are out there. It's sad. A lot of them are my age too! Sleep till noon or later won't work or do anything for themselves much less mow their own lawn.
