....for the first time since I started driving a truck.
All I read has me nervous!!
I'm leaving Grand Rapids, Michigan on Monday, headed to San Jose, Ca.
Nervous about the weather going on I80. I do have the option to head south and go in on I40. I cannot be delayed by the weather. I need to be at a convention center on Friday morning to load out and the show won't go on if I don't show. Lol.... I also don't have chains if there is a freak snowstorm. I can buy them if needed... but I'm praying I won't!! I saw that happened just last week. I80 was closed in Wyoming and Colorado.
I'm a little nervous about the mountains. I have been through WV, PA and the NC mountains a few times now. One good thing about being nervous is I turn off the radio, pay super close attention, drive sensible, watch other truckers, and just do it. I put what I read here into practice. I'm also driving a pretty light pup trailer. I think I total out around 35,000. Never a problem with weight at any state scalehouse. Usually get the bypass lane and never been called in.... so far....All these firsts can make you nervous!!! Lol. I did get pulled over yesterday..(as per my other thread...) lol
I'm nervous about the DOT in California. All the stories on here make me pictures them in SS Nazi uniforms and sending drivers off to Camps! Lol
I might be nervous, but I'm not scared. Ill be leaving out Monday, driving safe, and being professional. I just wanted to vent a little and see what y'all have to say. Y'all have helped me so much the last 5 months.
So far I have driven through NC, SC, GA, TN, VA, MD, NJ, NY, CT, MA, WV, PA, OH, MI, IL, IN, IO, NE, KS, OK, TX, AR...I think that's it so far. Looking forward to adding a few States to that!! I have been looking forward to driving coast to coast since I took this job and the time is here. After I leave San Jose I'm headed home to NC for a couple week break!
Thanks for all the advise, information and knowledge y'all have shared with me and others here. I come here more than Facebook or my email!! Lol.....
Headed to California.....

Don't worry so much.
80 Should be fine.
Check the Forecasts.
If you have a 53 foot closed tandem trailer (not spread) make sure your
Rear Tandem Axle is no more than 40ft from Kingpin.
Don't go over 60mph -
I'm from California and every time I come back home I will get a level 1 inspection 33% of the time. So before going in, via I-80, I will stop at the Boomtown Casino and do a mid-trip. Just assume the worse about California and you usually will be correct.

My trailer is 28'... pretty easy to maneuver! Lol My truck is a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia 10 speed...bright Penske yellow....lol...

Run 80 . Shortest fastest and best route . 40 sucks.
Look at the weather channel and get the 10 day forecast for the trip and then enjoy the drive .
It looks like a nice week to be on 80 from the looks of it to me .ncmickey Thanks this. -
Also there are a lot of CHP that patrol that area around Truckee and Gold Run so be careful coming down those hills. Also the brake check area after Donner Summit says all trucks must check brakes so make sure you stop since you will probably see other truckers just ignoring the sign. The last time I went through there the CHP had two trucks pulled over just before the decline. I am assuming because they didn't bother to do a brake check.
