Fuel card

NASTC! $250 annual membership and I think $7.50 a month fee. The best discounts are at the TA and petro, so you will need to do a little extra planning if you want the best prices. The savings are like from $0.10 to $0.35 a gallon depending on the location where you make you purchase.

 

As the previous writer states, NASTC with fleetone doing the billing is the way to go. The initial membership is a bit steep in some peoples minds and as I recall it's $3.95 mth fee, but you will get that $$ back in the discounts you get. It's the best card out there. You will have to submit your banking details to them as they only allow you minimal credit. They usually send out a billing email on Friday and my bank actually pays them every Monday. It's a good system. It shows where you fueled and what discounts you received. Be aware that discounts can vary from state to state. Some places are high margin, some low, so you may get bigger discounts at some TS than others.
The card is based around the TA/Petro chain with a lot of independents. The system is based on a cost plus for your fuel. Just like any commodity. I'm glad I went with it.

NASTC wantz new owner operator to attend a class on friday(whole day)at their location in tennesse so you can get their fuel card,that was a deal breaker for me

 

The conference [big sales event] was not a requirement for me, but just starting out, I went because I felt I could use all the information that I could find. I learned a lot without the unnecessary purchase of things I don't need.

 

Is it easy to determine the final price in advance? Do you have you check prices at each individual stop on a route until you learn where the better areas are? Or can you search for lowest price along a highway?

 

I believe the prices change daily. You can log on to their site and check today's and tomorrow's fuel prices by state and retail location. I have it bookmarked on my phone so I can check and compare fuel prices instantly.
They also send you a daily email telling you whether the price of fuel will go up or down at midnight.

 

NASTC is the way to go. As far as joining from what I understand is if you're leased to a carrier you don't have to attend the class and if you're a carrier you have to attend the class. However, there is apparently a work around if you're a carrier and that is to say you're leased to your carrier and then you don't have to attend. I would have joined two years before I did if it wasn't for that so called class. The class is really just a day long sales pitch for all of NASTC has to offer and it's a complete waste of time in my opinion. They could accomplish the same thing in a shorter amount of time and do it via a webinar and not waste everyone's valuable time and I put something similar to that on my "class" feedback form.
