I my case it was a baf over head set. A month prior I had a broken rocker arm, while it was open I had them do the overhead. I came home and took 2 weeks holidays on my next trip it started. So when I got back home had it opened up again and found out the previous shop did not lock down some of the adjustments so everything came undone. My shop re did over head and locked down everything properly and MY problem wss solved

Thanks for the response. I did some exterior inspection yesterday including checking manifold slip joints and manifold bolts.

But still not sure what it causing that ping / ticking noise.

    Keep ya all posted.

Thanks for any input or ideas.

Had a bxs acert with a ticking noise once. Turned out to be one of the valve springs had cracked. Since they are double springs I never noticed power wise. Took it to the shop and they did some digging and found it.

I'm sure you have found the problem by now. I had the same on my Cat 5EK. Turned out to be exhaust manifold gasket behind the turbo that I couldn't see real well

I have a Cat 5EK motor. Just had cups done with 2 reman injectors. Ran terrible . Had cylinder delete done found #2 injector week. Had a different guy put that in and found injector heights were to high on the other five. Questioned the first guy and said his cat tool is set for what ever the height is. I know the height is 3.07 + or - .01. The others were at 3.78. Who is right?

The CAT tool is a go/no go set up. It has a split on the stem one side is higher than the other. If either side is flush then the height is incorrect. They are only as good as the person using them

Just a thought. Is it possible that the noise is from the timing being advanced to reduce emissions. I could see this especially if it is more temperature related.
On a side I always thought that the acert engines seemed to have a more solid sounding combustion knock. Similar to the N14.
