So on Friday I get back to my yard to find out that all my lug nuts were loose and one stud was broken... I did my pre-trip in the morning and all the wheel checks were pointed in the correct direction.. During the course of my day I ALWAYS check them because it only takes a few seconds, so while I am opening the doors I take a look at them on my way to the back and I check passenger side when I open the passenger side door on the trailer.. I don't go far and I was within our 100km re-torque since the tire had been changed during the night shift when another driver had it...

This just goes to show anything can happen even if you are very careful with checking stuff out.... My guess is that the tire guy might have over tightened which would have caused the one stud to break and then the others to come loose because of this.. We have other ideas as well like bad rim, too much torque on the rear axle and small rims while turn which could probably cause this.. This isn't the first time we have had lug nuts loosen up on these trailers.. Regardless of why they came loose even if it falls on the tire guy or other reasons I am not happy... If this came off and killed someone or even just came off I would be fighting to defend myself in court and I don't know how I could.. I mean you can plea your case over and over about doing a proper circle check and in-trip inspections I'd probably still have a problem proving it... This is the kind of stuff that sucks cause it could cause big issues.. I mean if I had to go to court I am sure they would inspect the lugs, rims etc which might help...

I am thinking it's going to be to the point where you would need to take pictures everyday to cover your ###...

I just want to put this out there because it could be you next and you might not be as lucky... Like I said I did under 80km (100km total since tire change) so I didn't even put a lot of miles on the lugs... It's a scary thought....

You're absolutely right, just because something is right when you do your walk-around doesn't mean that it will still be right the next time. Good job catching it before something went seriously wrong.

Yeah and the crazy part is it was fine when I left after doing my last load.. So this happened within a 22km jog...

This got me thinking tho... Why wouldn't they make lug nuts so that they can't back off... Like the same thing some vehicles have on the hub spindle nut.. A castle nut and cotter pin.. It would hopefully at least stop the lug nuts from completely coming off the stuffs.. It would be one thing towards creating a safer system... I realize the possibility is still there that the cotter pin can break but if you get a heavy duty one the chances might be better.

    I can relate a similar experience. . Pulling a grain wagon. .

Me and another driver racing across I70 in the middle of the night. . Running together to get to east st louis and talking on cb..I told him I was going to have a blow out before we got there. .I was feeling a strange vibration. . We stopped. . Looked. . Felt the tires and nothing. . So on we went. . Wide open. .97 mph. :) Good times!

Reached the shipper. . Got up couple hours later. . Loaded. . And while crossing scales weighing out another driver stopped me. . Said my driver side drive tires were wobbling.. got out and looked. .

I had 2 lug nuts remaining and they were at the end of the studs. . The other studs were either broken or had wollered the wheel holes egg shaped.

Called the owner of the company and he wanted to put lug nuts on the other 2 studs and have me drive 200 miles back to the yard. Um NO!

They sent a road service truck. . Had to replace both wheels. . The hub and all lug nuts with studs. .

I quit shortly after that. .idiot owner worried about grain vs wheels flying off the truck and crumpling a 4 wheeler.

We had the washers under the lug nuts split... Tire got over tightened... Luckily caught it on a pretrip... If it was just one, on one tire would have just replaced that one and called it an oops... Found two! One on each steer tire... Changed out ALL lug nuts!

Once many years ago just west of Pennwell, TX, before the interstate was competed, I was east bound with a bull hauler a ways in front of me. We were running about 80 & all of a sudden his left rear outside trailer tire came off. At that time they was working on the interstate, that tire went way up in the air & my eyes were watching it. When it peaked out & started down my eyes caught a 4 wheeler coming from the other direction on the west bound services road & I clinched up because for a moment I thought it would hit that car. It didn't, it went on out in the field.

I hollered at the bull hauler on the CB telling him & he did not believe me, he would not stop. He told me to leave him alone, that he did not have time to stop for nothing. I went ahead & passed him & went on because if anything bad was going to happen I did not want to be around to witness it. I still remember that bull wagon to this day, it was a black conventional Pete & was all dressed up.

One never knows when something like that may happen.

I want to thank the original poster for share his story. It is just to bad that has been subjected to the metric system. Real truck drivers talk about miles not kilometers.

And I am of course joking. Thank you and I am glad that you handled the problem before someone got hurt.

lol.... I do like the imperial system... I'd rather have feet on the bridges then meters... I know miles sounds better then km lol... I am terrible with converting km to miles...

Yeah I am glad I seen it before it was too late.. I would be devastated if it came off on the road..

great catch, some mental midget who did the tire work should have placed a retorque card where you would find it hooking up, must have been too much work for him.
