If my research is correct I believe that they will bill you for the cost of driving school if you do not complete a mandatory 1 year contract with them. After that year, they start reimbursing you so that you can make your money back...but if you don't want to, you're a free man/woman. I have the luxury of living in a small city that has quite a few local companies that hire local with only 1 year of exp.
Just read somewhere else that if you sign on with CRST, you will have to be with your mentor for a full year? I don't mind this, as exp. is vital, but you know what they say: Plan for everything so you're never surprised.

CRST is team operation, keep that in mind. CRST gets some bad reviews on here, but I won't knock the company because I've never worked there and they have drivers that have been there for years.
Here's some more to compare:
Midwest-Coast Transport - school is MCT and one location is near you, but can't open the link for some reason. It's a coast-to-coast reefer operation.
Witte Bros. - Troy, Mo has their own CDL school and requires $500.00 to get started.
Millis Transfer - school in Trenton, OH and requires $500.00 to get started. One of the best dry van companies around and drivers average over $50K per year.
Southern Refrigerated Transport - school in Texarkana provided 3 meals a day and hotel room. Coast-to-coast reefer outfit.Chip Off The Old Block Thanks this. -
Millis looks interesting but only because they're in-state. Driving as a team won't be an issue for me, as I'll be looking for as much exp. as I can get before I get my 1 year in and get out. Wooster Motor Ways is always hiring around here, and it's a great company to get into. Just need that time in...
I appreciate the help, China. I think I'm going to go ahead and go with CRST since I won't have to wait for my hair to grow, it's relatively cost free ( Save for food, ) and since I'm lucky enough to not have very many bills the pay won't be a problem. The exp. is worth more than the pay by far. -
