rant, Your post referred to Implements of... That exception appears in IL rules, and my reply post addressed the issue relative to IL. An exact definition of Implements of Husbandry seems to be difficult to find. The IL Farm Bureau provided a definition for their members, and I quoted that. Whatever the NYDOT supervisor told you would have little relevance in IL. Yes, a tractor (i.e. a farm tractor) does qualify, however, if over-height a permit is required. The IL exemption applies to over-width only. You say "clear as mud". Welcome to the world of OD loads. Best advice as articulated by other posters: Study the permits together with any attachments and get appropriate advise wherever needed.

I would need a county permit for Route 1 in Erie County, NY.
I had same experience as MSO JUMPER. Just last week. Critten road. The permit was only $50. The escort driver I hire to run me from Girard, OH. to Lockport, NY. NY certified. I don't run many overheight loads out east. He told me the fine would be about $1000 each for the driver and the escort driver in addition the state w'ould issue a $500 ticket to each for getting a permit violation. True or not, I don't know. Didn't want to find out. I need one question answered. My load put me at 14'11" tall, I was the only stepdeck, my deck height is 39". The other 4 drivers all had rgn's. Their load height was 13'6". They collectively told me that Ohio could have stopped me and made me transload to rgn's because the ride height of the rgn is lower than my stepdeck therefor making the load reducible. Any help on the Ohio information. I was issued an Ohio permit.

xsera. I'm sure you have already thought of the answer to your question. The only authority to give the correct answer is the DOT for each state in which you would be traveling. And, of course, shippers always quote the exact height of the load and shippers are never wrong. What's more, shippers never lie. Couple that with a known attribute of drivers - never trust anyone or anything - and you arrive at a starting point. Or, do you? Because we put up with this crap and still make it work, I think we are underpaid.

So, what would they say if you owned truck and trailer, and you grabbed that load, and it made you 14'11? "Driver, you need to go rent an Rgn, because it's sits lower making it a reducible load"? That's not the way it works. You can run overheight loads on flatbeds and steps. The load itself has to be reducible, not the truck and trailer. I've run overheight loads on stepdecks before.

The thing is, you would have a buttload more expense running the same load as they are. Say for example, your load is the same as theirs, and slightly wide. Pays the same money, but you're going to have to spend more on permits, have a much longer route with more turns, more restrictions, and pay for a pilot car. They're wrong about Ohio.

I believe they're playing a trick on you....

...or they're all stupid. Let's hope they're playing a prank.

Guntoter and MSO JUMPER Thank this.

The load in question was also 10'6" wide so the miles ran were within 100 miles for all loads. I hauled two pieces and the rgn's hauled only one. I was reimbursed for all escort expenses. I'm calling Ohio DOT this week to find out. Was just wondering if anyone heard of such a thing before. I did go past 4 DOT in ohio and kept going.
